A UAE student visa for an Indian student is a one-year residence permit sponsored by the institution that admits you, renewed each year while you stay enrolled. The university lodges an entry permit on GDRFA Dubai or the federal ICP system for AED 210 (AED 200 plus 5% VAT), you enter within 60 days, take the medical fitness test and give Emirates ID biometrics, and the residence permit is issued electronically for AED 240. Two things gate the process: Indian certificates attested through the Ministry of External Affairs and the UAE Embassy, and tuition paid before the university files. The sequence takes three to five weeks and universities close visa files four to six weeks before the August and January intakes.

The compact version with the price card and checklist is on the UAE student visa route page. This is the long version, written around an August intake.

Who qualifies for a UAE student visa?

Students admitted to a full-time program at a UAE-licensed institution: the federal universities, emirate-licensed universities such as the American University of Sharjah and Khalifa University, and the branch campuses clustered in Dubai International Academic City, Dubai Knowledge Park and Abu Dhabi, including Indian institutions such as BITS Pilani, Manipal, Amity and Symbiosis and British and Australian universities. The institution must hold a licence that allows it to sponsor residence visas; training centres and unlicensed colleges cannot, and enrolling with one leaves you on a tourist visa with no legal way to stay.

Students under 18, or any student living with a resident parent, can be sponsored by the parent instead, which many Indian families in the UAE prefer because the parent's visa renewal covers the child. The parent must meet the family sponsorship rule of AED 4,000 a month (or AED 3,000 plus accommodation) described in the UAE family visa guide.

Why does attestation come first?

The UAE recognises Indian certificates only after a chain of attestations: the state Human Resource Department (for educational documents) or a notary, the Ministry of External Affairs apostille or attestation, and the UAE Embassy or consulate in India, followed by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs after arrival (AED 150 per document). Universities also run an equivalency check through the Ministry of Education for degree programs. Agencies complete the Indian chain in two to four weeks for about INR 2,000 to 5,000 per document; start as soon as results are declared, because the university will not lodge the permit without the attested 12th or degree certificate.

Tuition is paid directly to the institution; Indian branch campuses charge AED 40,000 to 70,000 a year and international universities AED 60,000 to 120,000. Vistolane charges the AED 210 government fee at the official rupee rate and shows it on the UAE destination page; the university's bundle is paid to the university.

How much money must I show?

The UAE sets no funds rule for student visas. The university requires tuition payment (at least the first semester) before lodging the permit and mandatory health insurance; living costs in Dubai run AED 3,000 to 5,000 a month for shared accommodation, food and transport, and campus housing AED 20,000 to 40,000 a year. Education loans from Indian banks are accepted by universities as payment and no bank statement is filed with GDRFA, which makes the UAE simpler than Canada, the UK or Australia on the financial side.

How does the application run?

  1. Attest your certificates in India: HRD or notary, MEA and UAE Embassy, two to four weeks.
  2. Accept the offer and pay the tuition deposit and the university's visa fee; submit the passport scan, photos, attested certificates and the visa form.
  3. The university lodges the entry permit on GDRFA or ICP; approval arrives in 48 hours to five working days. Enter the UAE within 60 days.
  4. Within the first two weeks: medical fitness test at an approved centre, Emirates ID biometrics at an ICP centre and MOFA attestation of the certificates; the university's PRO books the appointments.
  5. The residence permit is issued electronically for one year and linked to the Emirates ID, which is delivered within a week. Renew through the university before expiry each year.

How long does it take for an August intake?

StageTypical time
Certificate attestation2 to 4 weeks; start in May or June
Entry permit48 hours to 5 working days after tuition payment
Travel and arrival formalities1 to 2 weeks
Residence permit3 to 7 days after medical clearance

Universities close visa files four to six weeks before orientation; a student whose attestation is late can enter on a tourist visa and change status inside the country for the AED 500 inside-country fee, which universities arrange but which costs more.

Working, dependants and what comes after

Part-time work needs a MOHRE student work permit sponsored by the employer; free-zone universities arrange internships through their career offices and some free zones allow part-time permits for students aged 15 and over. Spouses of students are rarely sponsored on a student's residence; a working spouse sponsors the family instead. Health insurance through the university plan covers basic care.

Graduates switch to an employment visa when an employer issues a MOHRE work permit, usually inside the country, and the UAE employment visa guide explains the two-year residence that follows. High-achieving graduates with a GPA of 3.5 or above from a top-ranked university can apply for the 10-year Golden Visa described in the UAE Golden Visa guide, and skilled graduates earning AED 15,000 or more can take the five-year self-sponsored Green visa.

Why are UAE student visas refused, and what fixes each reason?

Attestation incomplete. Certificates without the MEA and UAE Embassy stamps, or names that differ between certificates and passport. Complete the chain before paying the visa fee and align names with affidavits where they differ.

Medical fitness failure. Tuberculosis scarring, HIV or hepatitis found at the arrival test. Treatable TB cases receive a conditional visa with treatment; other results end the application and the university's refund policy applies.

Previous UAE record. Unpaid fines, an overstay or an uncancelled previous visa. Clear the record through GDRFA or ICP before the university lodges the permit.

Institution not licensed. Admission to a training centre that cannot sponsor residence visas. Enrol only with institutions listed by the Ministry of Education, KHDA (Dubai) or ADEK (Abu Dhabi).

Documents or photo rejected. Blurred scans, an expired passport or a photo that fails the biometric check. Resubmit compliant scans; the university's PRO resubmits without a new government fee in most cases.
