Citizenship
Naturalisation, residence counting, absences and civics testing requirements.

Naturalisation turns permanent residence into a passport. Most countries require three to five years of lawful residence (Canada 3 of 5 years, UK 5 years plus 12 months on ILR, USA 5 years or 3 if married to a citizen, Germany 5 years since 2024), a language test and a civics or life-in-the-country test.
Dual nationality is the deciding factor for Indian applicants: India does not allow it, so naturalising abroad means surrendering the Indian passport and applying for an OCI card.
How the process works
- 1
Meet the residence clock
Count physical presence, not just visa validity; absences above the limit reset or delay eligibility.
- 2
Pass the tests
Language at B1 or equivalent and the citizenship test for the country.
- 3
Good character
Police certificates, tax compliance and no serious immigration breaches.
- 4
Ceremony and passport
Attend the oath or ceremony, then apply for the passport and, if relevant, the OCI card.
Why applications get refused
- Too many days outside the country in the qualifying period
- Unpaid tax or undeclared income
- Immigration breaches such as overstays during earlier visas
- Applying before the ILR or PR waiting period is complete
