Indian students admitted to an Irish university, institute of technology or a college on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP) apply from India for a long stay D study visa. The fee is EUR 60 single entry, the file shows tuition paid, EUR 10,000 in living funds for the first year, private medical insurance and English at IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, and the New Delhi visa office decides in about 8 weeks. After arrival students register for Stamp 2 (Irish Residence Permit EUR 300), work 20 hours a week in term and 40 in holidays, and graduates receive Stamp 1G for 12 months after a level 8 degree or 24 months after a master's or PhD.
The short version with the price card and checklist is on the Ireland student visa route page. This article is the long version: who qualifies, how funds are evidenced, what Irish study costs, the September sequence, Stamp 2 and 1G rights and the reasons files are refused. Ireland is outside Schengen, so students planning European travel also need a Schengen visa, explained in the Schengen visa step-by-step guide.
Who qualifies for an Ireland student visa?
Students holding a letter of acceptance for a full-time course on the ILEP, at degree level (NFQ 7 to 10) or an eligible language or non-degree programme, who have paid the tuition (or at least EUR 6,000 of it where the college allows instalments), show EUR 10,000 in living funds, hold private medical insurance and meet the college's English requirement, typically IELTS 6.0 for undergraduate and 6.5 for postgraduate entry. Indian students are the largest non-EU group in Ireland, concentrated in computer science, data analytics, business, pharmaceutical science and engineering at Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, University of Galway, University College Cork, Dublin City University, University of Limerick, Maynooth and the technological universities.
The visa officer also tests intentions: the course should follow logically from previous study and work, gaps should be explained, and the student should show they will return or move to an employment permit lawfully. Students may not bring family members on Stamp 2; spouses come only once the graduate holds a Critical Skills permit, as the Ireland join family visa guide explains.

How do I show funds for an Ireland student visa?
The visa office requires evidence of EUR 10,000 for the first year's living costs, or EUR 700 a month for courses shorter than 6 months, plus the tuition receipt. Acceptable evidence is 6 months of statements in the student's or a parent's name with a sponsorship letter and relationship proof, an Indian education loan sanction letter from a scheduled bank, or a deposit with an approved Irish student fee payment service that releases money after arrival. Statements must show the history of the balance; lump sums credited in the weeks before lodging are queried and usually fatal.
Scholarship letters reduce the amount to show by the grant. The guide to proving funds for a student visa compares the evidence types, and the student funds checks by destination guide sets Ireland's EUR 10,000 against the UK, Canada and Australia.
How does the application run?
- Accept the offer, pay tuition (or the first EUR 6,000) and obtain the college's letter of acceptance confirming the course, fees paid and insurance arrangements.
- Complete the AVATS online form, print and sign the summary and book a VFS Global Ireland appointment.
- Lodge the passport, photos, acceptance letter, fee receipt, funds evidence, IELTS result, academic certificates, statement of purpose, insurance and the EUR 60 fee at VFS, with fingerprints.
- Wait about 8 weeks; respond to any request from the New Delhi visa office within the deadline.
- Collect the passport, travel within the visa dates, and register with the immigration service within 90 days for Stamp 2 (EUR 300); apply for a PPS number to work.
What is the timeline for a September intake?
| Stage | Typical time | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Offer and tuition payment | February to June | Deposit or full first year |
| Funds and documents | 2 to 4 weeks | Loan sanction, statements, insurance |
| Decision | About 8 weeks; 10 in summer | Lodge by early June for September |
| Travel | Up to 2 weeks before orientation | Visa must be issued first |
| Registration | Within 90 days of arrival | IRP card, Stamp 2 |
January intakes follow the same sequence with lodgement in October. The college's international office tracks the visa and issues a deferral letter if the decision runs late.
What happens after arrival?
Stamp 2 students work 20 hours a week during term and 40 hours a week in the summer (June to September) and winter (15 December to 15 January) holidays, with a PPS number and at least the national minimum wage. The permission is renewed yearly on proof of attendance, progression and fees. Students may travel within the Common Travel Area only with a UK visa, and to Schengen only with a Schengen visa.
Graduates of a level 8 honours degree receive Stamp 1G for 12 months and master's or doctoral graduates for 24 months, allowing full-time work without a permit while they find an employer. Most Indian graduates move to a Critical Skills Employment Permit, described in the Ireland employment permit guide, which leads to Stamp 4 after 2 years and to naturalisation after 5 years of reckonable residence; Stamp 2 time does not count. The post-study work rights comparison sets Stamp 1G against other destinations.
Why are Ireland student visas refused, and what fixes each reason?
Finances not shown or not traceable. Funds below EUR 10,000 or a sudden deposit. Build the balance over 6 months, use an education loan and explain every large credit.
Course not credible. Programme unrelated to previous study or a step down in level. Write a statement of purpose that links the course to your record and career.
Documents incomplete. Missing fee receipt, insurance or translations. Follow the ISD study checklist exactly.
Immigration history. Undeclared refusals from Ireland, the UK or Schengen states. Declare and explain every refusal.
Intentions doubted. Gaps in study or work without explanation. Explain gaps in a cover letter with evidence.
