A UAE family visa from India starts with the sponsor's salary: AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation provided by the employer, lets a resident sponsor a spouse, sons up to the age of 25 and unmarried daughters of any age, while parents need AED 20,000 (or AED 19,000 plus a two-bedroom home) and health insurance. The sponsor lodges an entry permit on GDRFA Dubai or ICP for AED 210 per dependant (AED 200 plus 5% VAT), approved within 48 hours; the family enters within 60 days, dependants aged 18 and over take the medical fitness test, everyone gives Emirates ID biometrics, and the AED 240 residence permit is issued for the sponsor's visa period. Attested Indian marriage and birth certificates are the gate, and the whole process takes two to three weeks once attestation is done.

The compact version with the price card and checklist is on the UAE family visa route page. This article explains how the salary rule is tested, what attestation involves and where Indian files fall down.

Who can sponsor family in the UAE, and whom?

Since the 2022 reforms any resident can sponsor family regardless of job title; the test is salary and housing. The sponsor needs AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation provided by the employer, shown on the MOHRE contract or a salary certificate for government, semi-government and free-zone employees, together with a tenancy contract (Ejari in Dubai, Tawtheeq in Abu Dhabi), a utility bill and a valid Emirates ID. Housing allowance counts only when it appears on the contract.

Spouses can be sponsored by husbands or wives. Sons are sponsored to age 25, extended while they study; unmarried daughters have no age limit. Parents are sponsored on a one-year visa with a salary of AED 20,000 (or AED 19,000 plus a two-bedroom home), mandatory health insurance for each parent and, in some emirates, a refundable deposit; both parents must be sponsored together unless one is deceased or divorced. Golden Visa holders sponsor spouse and children of any age without the salary test, as the UAE Golden Visa guide explains.

Why does attestation matter so much?

GDRFA and ICP accept Indian civil documents only after the full chain: the state Home Department (or a notary for some states), the Ministry of External Affairs, the UAE Embassy or consulate in India, and then the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs after arrival at AED 150 per certificate. A marriage registered under the Special Marriage Act or a personal-law marriage with a registered certificate is accepted; a religious ceremony without civil registration is not, and couples married years ago without registering should register before applying. Birth certificates must show both parents' names matching the passports. Agencies in India complete the chain in two to four weeks for INR 1,500 to 3,000 per document.

How does the application run?

  1. Attest certificates in India: Home Department or notary, MEA and UAE Embassy for the marriage and birth certificates; two to four weeks.
  2. The sponsor files the entry permit on GDRFA Dubai, ICP or at an Amer centre with the contract or salary certificate, tenancy, Emirates ID and attested certificates; approval within 48 hours.
  3. The family enters within 60 days; the permit allows a 60-day stay to complete formalities. Dependants already in the UAE on visit visas change status inside the country for AED 500.
  4. Adults take the medical fitness test and everyone gives Emirates ID biometrics; MOFA attests the certificates at AED 150 each.
  5. The residence permit is issued electronically for the sponsor's visa period and linked to the Emirates ID, delivered within a week.

How long does it take from India?

StageTypical time
Attestation in India2 to 4 weeks
Entry permit48 hours
TravelWithin 60 days of issue
Medical, Emirates ID, MOFA attestation5 to 10 days after arrival
Residence permit3 to 7 days after medical clearance

File two to three weeks before the planned arrival once attestation is complete; school admission deadlines in Dubai, where KHDA-regulated schools fill by spring for September, often drive the date. A sponsor who has just arrived must have the residence permit and Emirates ID before filing for family, which adds two to four weeks after the employment visa process.

After arrival

The family's residence is tied to the sponsor's visa and renewed with it; if the sponsor's visa is cancelled, dependants have the same grace period (60 to 180 days by skill level) to leave or find a new sponsor. Dependants may work with a MOHRE work permit sponsored by their employer without changing the family visa, which costs the employer a reduced permit fee. Children aged four to eighteen must be enrolled in school, and health insurance is mandatory for every family member in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Parents' visas are annual and need the deposit and insurance renewed each year. Dependants of Golden Visa holders receive residence for the same 10 years. The UAE offers no citizenship route to most expatriates, so long-term family planning turns on keeping the sponsor's visa valid and on the Green and Golden tiers.

Why are UAE family visas refused, and what fixes each reason?

Salary below the rule. The sponsor's MOHRE contract shows under AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 without accommodation on the contract. Provide an updated contract or salary certificate; housing allowance must appear on the contract to count.

Certificates not attested. A marriage or birth certificate without the MEA and UAE Embassy stamps, or a religious marriage without registration. Complete attestation and register the marriage under the applicable Act before filing.

Medical fitness failure. Tuberculosis, HIV or hepatitis found at the dependant's arrival test. Treatable TB receives a conditional visa; other results end the application.

Sponsor's record. Expired residence, pending fines or a visa not yet linked to a valid Emirates ID. Renew the sponsor's documents and clear fines before applying.

Parents' file incomplete. No two-bedroom tenancy, missing insurance or only one parent sponsored. Sponsor both parents together with insurance and the required tenancy; some emirates also require the deposit.
