Indian residents of Qatar sponsor their spouse and children on a family residence visa when they earn QAR 10,000 a month, or QAR 6,000 with employer-provided housing, in an eligible profession. The entry visa costs QAR 200 per person and is approved in 1 to 2 weeks on Metrash2 or at the Ministry of Interior; after arrival each dependant completes the medical and fingerprints and receives a QID at about QAR 500 a year plus a QAR 100 health card. Dependants are the spouse, sons under 25 and unmarried daughters, marriage and birth certificates must be attested by the MEA and the Qatar Embassy, and dependants may work with a permit. Children attend private or Indian community schools.

The short version with the price card and checklist is on the Qatar family residence visa route page. This article is the long version: the salary and profession test, who counts as a dependant, fees including renewals and schooling, the attestation chain, converting from a visit visa inside Qatar, the timeline and the refusal reasons. The sponsor's own residence comes from the Qatar work visa guide.

Who qualifies for a Qatar family residence visa?

A resident with a valid QID in a profession the Ministry of Interior lists as eligible for family sponsorship (professional, technical, supervisory and administrative roles; not labourers, drivers or domestic workers), with a basic salary of QAR 10,000 a month or QAR 6,000 when the employer provides accommodation, evidenced by the employment contract and 3 to 6 months of Wage Protection System credits. The sponsor must have suitable accommodation, usually a tenancy contract in their name or an employer's housing letter.

Dependants are the spouse (one spouse), sons under 25 and unmarried daughters of any age; sons over 25 in full-time education and parents are approved case by case, parents typically needing a sponsor salary around QAR 20,000 and a refundable deposit. The marriage must be registered in India and the certificate attested, and children's birth certificates must name both parents. Relatives who do not qualify for residence come on the visit visa in the Qatar family visit visa guide.

How does the salary and profession test work?

The Ministry of Interior reads the basic salary on the contract, not the gross package, so an engineer on QAR 9,000 basic with QAR 4,000 in allowances and no employer housing does not qualify until the basic reaches QAR 10,000 or the employer provides accommodation.

What documents are needed, and how does attestation work?

Sponsor. QID, passport, employment contract or salary certificate stating the basic salary and housing provision, 3 to 6 months of bank statements with Wage Protection credits, the tenancy contract or employer housing letter, and a no-objection letter from the employer where the Ministry requests one.

Dependants. Passports valid 6 months, photos on a white background, the attested marriage certificate with Arabic translation, attested birth certificates for children, school enrolment or a letter of intent for children of school age, and for sons over 18 proof of full-time education.

Attestation chain. Indian certificates are attested by the state Home Department or HRD, then the Ministry of External Affairs, then the Qatar Embassy in New Delhi, and translated into Arabic by a Ministry of Justice licensed translator in Qatar; the chain takes 1 to 3 weeks through an agent. The guide to proving a genuine relationship explains why officers check certificates closely.

How does the application run?

  1. Confirm the sponsor's profession and basic salary meet the QAR 10,000 (or QAR 6,000 with housing) test and arrange accommodation.
  2. Attest and translate the marriage and birth certificates through the MEA and the Qatar Embassy.
  3. Apply on Metrash2 or at the Ministry of Interior for the family residence entry visa for each dependant, upload the documents and pay QAR 200 each; approval in 1 to 2 weeks.
  4. Dependants travel to Doha within the visa validity (or convert inside Qatar if already on a visit visa); within 30 days they complete the medical and fingerprints.
  5. The sponsor collects the dependant QIDs (about QAR 500 a year each) and health cards, and enrols children in school.

What happens after arrival?

Dependants hold a QID linked to the sponsor's, renewed together, and access public healthcare through the health card. A spouse may work with the sponsor's consent and the employer's work permit while remaining on the family QID, or transfer to a work QID; sons must transfer to a work or student status at 25. Children attend Indian community schools following CBSE (Doha has more than a dozen) or international schools, and universities in Education City admit dependants as students. The family QID lapses if the sponsor's residence ends, and a divorced spouse must find a new sponsor within a grace period. Long-term residents compare Qatar's rules with the UAE's in the UAE family residence visa guide.

Why are Qatar family residence visas refused, and what fixes each reason?

Basic salary below QAR 10,000. Allowances counted but basic too low. Ask the employer to restructure the package or provide housing to use the QAR 6,000 route.

Profession not eligible. Technician or labourer title on the QID. Only the employer can amend the profession; otherwise use the visit visa.

Certificates not attested or translated. Missing MEA or embassy stamp or Arabic translation. Complete the full chain before applying.

Accommodation not evidenced. No tenancy or housing letter. Sign a lease or obtain the employer's letter.

Son over 25 or married daughter. Outside the dependant definition. Apply for a work or student status instead.
