Indians take up jobs in Qatar on a work entry visa that the employer obtains and pays for: QAR 200, issued after the Ministry of Labour approves the recruitment, valid for a single entry. Before travelling the worker attends a Qatar Visa Center (QVC) in India for biometrics, the medical examination and signing of the electronic employment contract; after arrival the employer completes a second medical and fingerprinting and issues the residence permit (QID, QAR 500) within 30 days, and pays the QAR 100 a year work permit. The sequence takes 3 to 6 weeks. Since the 2020 and 2021 labour reforms Qatar has a QAR 1,000 minimum wage with QAR 500 food and QAR 300 housing allowances, no exit permits for most workers and job changes without a no-objection certificate.

The short version with the price card and checklist is on the Qatar work visa route page. This article is the long version: who qualifies, the employer's and the worker's steps, who pays what, the timeline for an Indian hire, the contract and residence rules and the reasons applications are delayed or refused.

Who qualifies for a Qatar work visa?

Any Indian worker with a job offer from a Qatari employer that holds Ministry of Labour approval to recruit for the role and nationality, who passes the QVC medical and, for skilled roles, holds the attested qualification. Indians are the largest community in Qatar, about 800,000 people, across construction, oil and gas, engineering, healthcare, hospitality, retail, IT, education and domestic work; Doha's hospitals, Qatar Airways, Qatar Energy, the universities in Education City and the construction and facilities contractors are the largest Indian employers.

Professionals attest their degree through the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the Qatar Embassy in New Delhi (or the Qatar Culture Attaché), nurses and doctors need Department of Healthcare Professions licensing after a prometric exam, and engineers register with the Urban Planning Ministry's engineers committee. Workers with Emigration Check Required passports need Protector of Emigrants clearance on e-Migrate, since Qatar is an ECR country, and the contract must meet the Indian Embassy's minimum referral wage. The Embassy of India in Doha publishes the current figures.

How does the application run?

  1. The employer secures Ministry of Labour approval for the role and nationality, issues the offer letter and uploads the electronic contract.
  2. The employer obtains the work entry visa (QAR 200) and sends the visa number to the worker.
  3. The worker books the Qatar Visa Center appointment online, attends for biometrics, the medical and contract signing, and pays the QVC fee; attestation and e-Migrate run in parallel.
  4. On QVC clearance the worker travels to Doha within the visa validity; the employer arranges accommodation where contracted.
  5. The employer completes the second medical and fingerprints and issues the QID within 30 days; the worker registers on Metrash2, opens a bank account for Wage Protection payments and obtains the health card.

The QID is the residence permit, valid 1 to 3 years and renewed by the employer, and the worker holds a Metrash2 account for government services. Since 2018 exit permits are not required for most workers, and since September 2020 workers may change employer without a no-objection certificate by giving 1 month's notice in the first 2 years or 2 months after, with the new employer transferring the permit. End-of-service gratuity accrues at 3 weeks' basic salary for each year of service, and the Ministry of Labour's complaints platform and the Indian Embassy's labour wing handle disputes.

Workers earning QAR 10,000 a month or more (QAR 6,000 with employer housing) may sponsor their spouse and children on the family residence visa, described in the Qatar family residence visa guide, and any resident with an eligible profession and about QAR 5,000 salary may bring relatives for up to 6 months on the family visit visa in the Qatar family visit visa guide.

Why are Qatar work visas delayed or refused, and what fixes each reason?

Employer not in good standing. Wage Protection System arrears or a block on recruitment. Only the employer can clear this; ask before resigning in India.

Medical unfit. QVC tests show a listed infectious condition. Treat and retest where possible; some conditions bar entry.

Attestation missing. Degree not attested for a professional role. Complete MEA and Qatar Embassy attestation before the QVC visit.

Contract mismatch. Electronic contract terms differ from the offer. Do not sign at the QVC until the employer corrects the contract on the Ministry system.

e-Migrate refused. Wage below the referral minimum or unregistered agent. Correct the contract and use a registered recruiting agent.
