Canada: Study permit: refusal reasons and the fix
Canada Study permit, government fee CAD 150 per person; verified against canada.ca. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.
Financial insufficiency
The officer was not satisfied you could pay tuition and CAD 23,448 of living costs for year one, or the source of the funds was unclear.
The fix. Fund a GIC, show six months of statements with every large credit explained, and attach the loan sanction letter; add the sponsor's ITRs when parents pay.
Purpose of study not reasonable
The program did not follow from your previous education or work, or similar courses were available in India at lower cost without an explanation.
The fix. Rewrite the statement of purpose around a specific career outcome, name the modules and employers that make this program the right step, and address any downward move in level directly.
Not satisfied you will leave Canada
Weak ties to India combined with family already in Canada, or a statement that read as a plan to settle.
The fix. State dual intent honestly, then evidence the ties: family business, property, dependants, a job offer or return plan with employer letters.
Missing or defective attestation letter
The application was returned because the PAL or TAL was absent, expired or issued for a different DLI or program.
The fix. Ask the DLI to reissue the letter for the exact program and intake and file again; the IRCC fee is refunded when an application is returned.
Academic record and gaps
Low marks, backlogs or an unexplained gap of several years raised doubts about completing the program.
The fix. Explain gaps with employment letters or medical records, include the DLI's confirmation that your record met its admission standard, and show recent relevant work or study.
United Kingdom: Student visa: refusal reasons and the fix
United Kingdom Student visa, government fee £558 per person; verified against gov.uk. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.
Maintenance not held for 28 days or in the wrong format
The balance dipped below the required figure during the 28-day window, the statements were not in an accepted format, or the end date fell more than 31 days before the application.
The fix. Park the full amount early, do not touch it for a month, apply within 31 days of the closing date, and use bank statements or a bank letter that show the account holder, account number and every day's balance.
Genuine student test and credibility interview
The officer doubted you intended to study: a course unrelated to your record, weak knowledge of the course or institution, or a step down in level.
The fix. Prepare a short study plan that connects past study and work to the course and to a career outcome, learn the modules and the sponsor's details, and address any downward move directly.
CAS or sponsor problem
The CAS was used, expired, issued by a sponsor whose licence was suspended, or the details did not match the documents.
The fix. Ask the sponsor for a new CAS and reapply; keep qualification names and grades exactly as the CAS records them.
English evidence not accepted
A non-SELT IELTS, an expired test or a degree not confirmed as taught in English through Ecctis.
The fix. Use a SELT at an approved centre or obtain the Ecctis statement; sponsor-assessed English only works at degree level with a Higher Education Provider.
Immigration history or deception
An undeclared refusal from any country, a forged bank letter, or previous overstaying. Deception brings a ten-year ban.
The fix. Declare everything with the letters attached, use documents the issuer will confirm, and take advice before reapplying after a deception finding.
Australia: Student visa: refusal reasons and the fix
Australia Student visa, government fee AUD 2,500 per person; verified against immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.
Genuine Student requirement not met
The answers were generic, the course did not fit your study or work history, or similar courses were available in India at lower cost without explanation.
The fix. Write specific answers that connect your record to the course and to a career outcome, address any change of field or step down in level, and keep the answers consistent with the provider's own GS assessment.
Financial capacity not shown
Funds below the AUD 29,710 plus tuition and travel figure, unexplained recent deposits, or a loan letter that did not confirm disbursal.
The fix. Hold the full amount with a documented source, use a sanction letter that states the funds are available before travel, or use the parental income alternative with the tax return.
English below the required level
An expired test, a score under IELTS 6.0 without a matching ELICOS package, or a test type not accepted for visa purposes.
The fix. Retake an accepted test within two years of lodgement or add the ELICOS weeks the regulations require for a lower score.
Public interest criterion 4020: false or misleading information
A document or statement that could not be verified, including bank letters and employment letters, bringing a three-year bar on further grants.
The fix. Use only documents the issuer will confirm, declare everything accurately, and respond to any natural justice letter with evidence inside the deadline.
Health or OSHC gaps
A health examination not completed after referral, or OSHC not covering the full visa period.
The fix. Complete the examination before lodging and buy OSHC for the whole course length plus the visa buffer.
United States: F-1 student visa: refusal reasons and the fix
United States F-1 student visa, government fee USD 185 per person; verified against travel.state.gov. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.
214(b): not a credible student or likely to stay
Vague answers about the course, a program that does not follow from your record, relatives in the US, or a plan that sounded like permanent migration.
The fix. Prepare a specific study plan tied to your background and a career path; reapply when you can explain the change or with a better-fitting program.
Funding not credible
Funds appeared suddenly, the sponsor's income did not support the cost on the I-20, or a loan was only 'in principle'.
The fix. Show seasoned savings and the sponsor's income history, and obtain a sanction letter that confirms the amount and disbursal.
Social media or DS-160 inconsistencies
Public posts contradicted the application, or identifiers were omitted from the DS-160.
The fix. List every account, make them public before the interview and ensure the record is consistent with your stated plans.
221(g) administrative processing
Additional security checks, often for sensitive STEM fields, or a document request.
The fix. Respond to any request promptly; processing can take weeks to months, so apply early.
Prior violations or misrepresentation
An earlier overstay, unauthorised work or a false document brings long bars.
The fix. Obtain the full record, take advice on waivers, and disclose everything on the DS-160.

Germany Student visa, government fee €75 per person; verified against auswaertiges-amt.de. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.
Doubts about the study plan
The course did not fit the academic record, the interview answers were vague, or the mission suspected the real aim was work.
The fix. Write a specific motivation letter connecting your degree to the program and a career, prepare for the interview, and choose a program that follows from your record.
Funding not secured
Blocked account below €11,904, not yet confirmed, or a sponsor letter without the formal obligation format.
The fix. Fund the full amount before the appointment and use the provider's confirmation letter; sponsors in Germany obtain the obligation letter from their foreigners' office.
APS or document problems
Missing APS certificate, unverified mark sheets or inconsistent names and dates across documents.
The fix. Obtain the APS before applying and make sure passport, certificates and admission letter match exactly.
Language or academic fit
English or German level below the university's requirement, or an admission the mission considered doubtful.
The fix. Submit the test the university accepts and an admission letter confirming the language condition is met.

The fix. Prepare a specific study plan linking your record to the program and a career outcome; you can reapply through EEF with a stronger file.
Funds not sufficient or not credible
Balances below €877.50 a month, recent lump sums, or a loan not yet sanctioned.
The fix. Hold the full year's amount for several months with documented sources, or obtain a sanction letter confirming disbursal.
Accommodation or insurance missing
No proof of where you will live or no cover for the first weeks.
The fix. Book a student residence or obtain a host attestation and buy travel insurance for the gap.

A course below your level, repeated changes of field, or evidence the aim was work.
The fix. Choose a program that follows from your record and explain any change directly.
