Italy type D student visa for Indian students
Indian students admitted to an Italian university, academy or approved course of more than 90 days pre-enrol on the Universitaly portal and apply for a national type D study visa at VFS Global Italy: the fee is EUR 50, the consulate asks for EUR 10,179.85 of funds for the 2026-27 academic year, health insurance and accommodation, and decisions take two to six weeks. Within eight working days of arrival the student files the residence permit kit at a post office (about EUR 116), after which they may work 20 hours a week. Public university tuition runs EUR 900 to 4,000 a year on an income-based scale, and graduates can stay a year to look for work.

Italy student visa: quick answers
- Who qualifies for an Italy study visa?
- Students holding an admission letter from an Italian university, AFAM academy, ITS or a Ministry-recognised course of more than 90 days, who have completed the Universitaly pre-enrolment that the university validates, and who show funds, insurance and accommodation. Indian students most often enrol in English-taught master's degrees at Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino, Bologna, Padua, Sapienza and the private universities in Milan; a 12-year school record plus a bachelor's degree is required for master's entry, and the university requests the statement of comparability from CIMEA where needed.
- What does it cost?
- EUR 50 for the type D study visa (reduced from the standard EUR 116 national visa fee), paid in rupees at VFS with its service fee of about INR 2,000. In Italy the residence permit kit costs EUR 70.46 for the electronic permit plus a EUR 16 revenue stamp and EUR 30 postal charge, about EUR 116 in total; health insurance is EUR 150 a year through the national service or EUR 100 to 300 privately.
- How long does it take from India?
- Two to six weeks at the Embassy in New Delhi or the consulates in Mumbai and Kolkata after a complete file, with the law allowing up to 90 days; the Universitaly validation by the university takes one to three weeks before that. Apply as soon as the pre-enrolment is validated, from June for the September intake, because VFS slots in July and August fill fast.

Universitaly, CIMEA and what the consulate checks
Every non-EU student applying from abroad completes a pre-enrolment on universitaly.it: you upload the passport, photo, qualifications and the admission letter, choose the consulate for your state and the university validates the request, which unlocks the visa appointment. For bachelor's entry Italy requires 12 years of schooling; Indian students with a 10+2 and a bachelor's apply to master's degrees, and universities request the CIMEA statement of comparability or a declaration of value (DOV) from the consulate for the degree. English-taught programmes accept IELTS 6.0 to 6.5; Italian-taught programmes need CILS or CELI B2.
The consulate checks funds of EUR 10,179.85 for the first academic year (the figure the Ministry of Foreign Affairs set for 2026-27 and 2027-28), shown as a bank balance in the student's or a parent's name, an Indian education loan sanction letter, or a scholarship such as the regional DSU grant, Invest Your Talent in Italy or a university tuition waiver. Accommodation for the first months (a university residence contract, rental agreement or a host's hospitality declaration) and health insurance covering Italy are required, and a flight reservation showing arrival before the course starts.
Public universities set tuition on the ISEE income scale between EUR 900 and 4,000 a year, and most regions grant DSU scholarships to international students with low family income, which also waive fees. Private universities (Bocconi, Cattolica, LUISS, Politecnico-affiliated programmes) charge EUR 10,000 to 20,000. The visa is issued for the course length up to one year and renewed through the residence permit.

Timeline for a September intake
| Stage | Typical time | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Admission | February to June | Offer and tuition deposit |
| Universitaly validation | 1 to 3 weeks | University approves the pre-enrolment |
| VFS appointment and decision | 2 to 6 weeks | Peak in July and August |
| Travel | Before the course start | Type D visa valid for entry |
| Residence permit | 8 days to file; 1 to 3 months to collect | Receipt allows legal stay and travel back to India |
Start the admission process in winter, pre-enrol as soon as the offer arrives and lodge the visa by early July for a September start.
After arrival: permit, work, family and what comes next
The residence permit for study is renewed each year on proof of enrolment and exam progress, and the receipt (ricevuta) from the post office allows legal stay and travel to and from India while the card is produced. Students may work 20 hours a week (1,040 hours a year) without a separate permit, register with the national health service for EUR 150 a year and obtain a codice fiscale. Spouses and children can apply for family cohesion once the student holds a permit of at least one year and shows income.
After graduating, students convert to a 12-month permesso per attesa occupazione to look for work or to a work permit outside the Decreto Flussi quotas when hired, including the EU Blue Card at EUR 36,300 a year; the Italy work visa route page sets out the salary rules. Time on a study permit counts half toward the five years needed for the EU long-term residence permit.
