Italy family reunification visa for Indian spouses, children and parents
The spouse, minor children, dependent adult children and dependent parents of an Indian living in Italy on a residence permit of at least one year apply for family reunification: the sponsor requests a nulla osta from the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione, showing income of about EUR 7,000 a year plus half again for each family member and a housing suitability certificate, and the relative then applies at VFS Global Italy for a type D visa (EUR 116). The nulla osta is due in 90 days and the visa follows in two to four weeks. Indian marriage and birth certificates need the MEA apostille and an Italian translation, and family members may work from the day the residence permit is filed.

Italy family reunification visa: quick answers
- Who qualifies for family reunification in Italy?
- The sponsor must hold a residence permit valid at least one year for work, self-employment, study, asylum, family or religious reasons, or an EU long-term or Blue Card permit. Eligible relatives are the spouse aged 18 or over (not legally separated), minor children including the spouse's children, adult children who cannot support themselves for health reasons, and parents who have no other children in India able to support them, or parents over 65 whose other children cannot support them for documented health reasons. Blue Card and researcher families skip the one-year wait.
- What does it cost?
- EUR 116 for the type D visa per family member at VFS (plus its service fee of about INR 2,000); the nulla osta request costs a EUR 16 revenue stamp. In Italy each relative files the residence permit kit for EUR 116.46 (EUR 70.46 permit plus EUR 16 stamp and EUR 30 postage) with a EUR 40 to 50 contribution. The MEA apostille costs about INR 50 per document plus agency fees, and sworn Italian translations EUR 30 to 60 per page.
- How long does it take from India?
- The Sportello Unico must issue the nulla osta within 90 days of a complete request, though Milan, Rome and Bologna often take four to eight months; the consulate then issues the visa in two to four weeks, with the law allowing 90 days. The housing certificate from the comune takes one to two months before the request, so plan six to twelve months from first step to arrival.

Who qualifies, and how the income and housing tests work
| Family member | Conditions | Sponsor's extra income | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spouse (18 or over) | Marriage valid in India and recognised in Italy; not legally separated | +50 per cent of the social allowance | Registered partners recognised since 2016 |
| Minor children | Under 18, including the spouse's children with the other parent's consent | +50 per cent each; two or more under 14 count as one | Adopted children with recognised adoption |
| Adult children | Unable to support themselves for serious health reasons | +50 per cent | Medical certification |
| Parents | Dependent, with no other children in India; or over 65 whose other children cannot support them | +50 per cent each | Health insurance or SSN contribution for parents over 65 |
The income test is the annual social allowance (assegno sociale, about EUR 7,000 in 2026) increased by half for each family member to be reunited, so a worker bringing a spouse needs about EUR 10,500 of gross income shown on the CUD or tax return and recent payslips; income of cohabiting family members counts. The housing test is a certificate of suitability (idoneità alloggiativa) from the comune, or an ASL certificate of hygienic suitability, for the dwelling named in the request.
Indian marriage and birth certificates must be apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs and translated into Italian by a sworn translator or legalised by the Italian consulate; for marriages after the sponsor moved to Italy the consulate may interview both spouses. Unlike many countries, Italy admits dependent parents, which makes it one of the few European options for Indian families who want to bring an elderly parent.

Timeline for an Indian family
| Stage | Typical time | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Apostille and translation | 2 to 6 weeks | In India and Italy |
| Housing certificate | 1 to 2 months | Comune or ASL inspection |
| Nulla osta | 90 days by law; 4 to 8 months in Milan and Rome | Sportello Unico decision |
| Visa at VFS | 2 to 4 weeks | Within 6 months of the nulla osta |
| Residence permit | File within 8 days; card in 1 to 3 months | Receipt allows work and travel |
Families of Blue Card holders and researchers can file immediately on arrival of the sponsor; others wait until the sponsor's permit has at least a year left or has been renewed.
After arrival: work, school, healthcare and settlement
Family permits allow any employment or self-employment from the day the kit receipt is issued, and are renewed with the sponsor's; after the spouse has lived in Italy for two years or the children reach 18 the permit converts to an independent work or study permit. Children attend state schools free, and the whole family registers with the national health service without charge when the sponsor is employed.
Family members count their residence toward the EU long-term residence permit after five years, and the spouse of an Italian citizen can apply for citizenship after two years of marriage and residence (three abroad), with a B1 Italian test; Indian law requires renunciation of Indian citizenship on naturalisation.

Why applications on this route get refused, and the fix
Income below the threshold
Sponsor's declared income under the social allowance plus 50 per cent per relative.
The fix. Add cohabiting family income or wait for a full tax year at the required level.
Housing certificate missing or unsuitable
Dwelling too small for the family size under regional standards.
The fix. Obtain the certificate for a suitable dwelling before filing.
Certificates not legalised
Marriage or birth certificates without apostille or Italian translation.
The fix. Apostille through the MEA and use a sworn translator; Vistolane arranges both.
Relationship doubted
Marriage soon before the request, with little evidence of contact.
The fix. Attach photographs, travel records and communication logs; prepare for the consular interview.
Parents not eligible
Other children in India able to support them.
The fix. Document dependency and the health reasons for every sibling, or use the over-65 route with insurance.
