Germany student visa for Indian students
Indian students need a national D visa for study in Germany: a university admission, an APS certificate verifying your Indian qualifications, a blocked account of €11,904 (or equivalent proof of funds), health insurance and the €75 fee. Applications are lodged online through the Consular Services Portal and decided in about four to twelve weeks, so a winter-semester start means filing by June.

Germany student visa: quick answers
- Who qualifies for a German student visa?
- An applicant with an admission letter from a recognised German university (or a conditional admission or preparatory college place), an APS India certificate confirming the Indian degree or school record, proof of living costs for the first year, health insurance and, for German-taught courses, the required language level. Most Indian students enrol in English-taught master's programs, which need IELTS or TOEFL at the level the university sets.
- What does it cost?
- €75 (about INR 8,300) for the national visa, paid in rupees at the appointment, plus the VFS service fee. The blocked account holds €11,904 for the first year and releases €992 a month after arrival; providers charge a set-up fee. The APS certificate costs INR 18,000. Public universities charge no tuition in most states, only a semester contribution of about €150 to €400; Baden-Württemberg charges €1,500 a semester for non-EU students.
- How long does it take from India?
- APS verification takes three to four weeks, the blocked account two to three weeks to open and fund, and the visa decision four to twelve weeks after the appointment. Apply at least three months before the semester starts (October for winter, April for summer); the missions prioritise students close to their enrolment deadline.

Who qualifies for a German student visa
Section 16b of the Residence Act allows a visa for full-time study at a state or state-recognised higher education institution, including preparatory courses (Studienkolleg) and pre-study German courses linked to an admission. The mission checks the admission, the academic fit, funding, insurance and whether the plan is credible; a short interview at the appointment is common for Indian applicants.
Indian students must obtain an APS certificate from the Academic Evaluation Centre in New Delhi before applying, which verifies the authenticity of degrees and mark sheets; the certificate is valid indefinitely and costs INR 18,000. Living costs are shown with a blocked account (Sperrkonto) at a provider such as Expatrio, Fintiba or Coracle holding €11,904 for 2026, a formal obligation letter from a sponsor in Germany, or a scholarship letter covering at least that amount.
For an English-taught program, the university's English requirement is what counts; the mission does not set its own score. German-taught programs need the level the university requires, usually TestDaF 4 or DSH-2. Some German is expected for daily life and is checked at the interview for German-taught courses.

How the application runs, step by step
- 1
APS certificate
Apply online, pay INR 18,000, send attested documents; the certificate arrives in about three to four weeks.
- 2
Admission and funding
Secure the admission letter, open and fund the blocked account with €11,904, and arrange travel health insurance for the visa period.
- 3
Apply in the Consular Services Portal
Choose 'Study purposes', answer the questionnaire, upload the documents and complete the pre-check; the portal then lets you book a VFS appointment at the mission responsible for your state.
- 4
Appointment and biometrics
Bring the originals, pay the fee and give fingerprints; a short interview about the course and plans is common.
- 5
Decision and arrival
The visa is issued for entry; register your address within two weeks of arrival, enrol, open a bank account to receive the blocked funds and apply for the residence permit before the visa expires.

Working, dependants and what comes after
Students may work 140 full days or 280 half days a year, or 20 hours a week during the semester, in addition to student assistant jobs at the university. Spouses can join under family reunion and work without restriction. After graduation the 18-month job-seeker residence permit allows any work while you look for a position matching your degree.
Graduates move to the EU Blue Card at the 2026 thresholds of €50,700, or €45,934.20 for shortage occupations and new entrants (graduates within three years), or to the skilled worker permit. Settlement is available after two years for graduates of German universities in qualified employment. The Germany work route page covers the Blue Card rules in detail.

Why applications on this route get refused, and the fix
Doubts about the study plan
The course did not fit the academic record, the interview answers were vague, or the mission suspected the real aim was work.
The fix. Write a specific motivation letter connecting your degree to the program and a career, prepare for the interview, and choose a program that follows from your record.
Funding not secured
Blocked account below €11,904, not yet confirmed, or a sponsor letter without the formal obligation format.
The fix. Fund the full amount before the appointment and use the provider's confirmation letter; sponsors in Germany obtain the obligation letter from their foreigners' office.
APS or document problems
Missing APS certificate, unverified mark sheets or inconsistent names and dates across documents.
The fix. Obtain the APS before applying and make sure passport, certificates and admission letter match exactly.
Language or academic fit
English or German level below the university's requirement, or an admission the mission considered doubtful.
The fix. Submit the test the university accepts and an admission letter confirming the language condition is met.
Incomplete portal application
Documents not uploaded, pre-check not completed, or appointment booked without the portal process.
The fix. Complete the Consular Services Portal pre-check before booking; the appointment is refused otherwise.
