A Germany student visa application from India in 2026 rests on five things: an admission letter from a recognised German university, an APS certificate from the Academic Evaluation Centre in New Delhi verifying your Indian qualifications, a blocked account holding €11,904 for the first year, health insurance, and the €75 national visa fee paid in rupees. The application is lodged online through the Consular Services Portal and then at a VFS appointment, and the mission decides in about four to twelve weeks. For an October start you should file by June.

The compact version with the price card and checklist is on the Germany student visa route page. This is the long version, written around a winter-semester start.

Who qualifies for a Germany student visa?

Section 16b of the Residence Act allows a national visa for full-time study at a state or state-recognised higher education institution, including preparatory courses (Studienkolleg) and pre-study German courses linked to an admission. You need the admission letter or a conditional admission, the APS certificate, proof of living costs for the first year, health insurance and, for German-taught courses, the language level the university requires (usually TestDaF 4 or DSH-2). Most Indian students enrol in English-taught master's programs, where the university's IELTS or TOEFL requirement is what counts; the mission does not set its own score.

The mission also checks that the plan is credible: the course should follow from your academic record, and a short interview at the appointment about the program, the funding and your plans after graduation is common for Indian applicants. Applicants moving down a level, changing field without explanation, or whose real aim appears to be work draw the hardest questions.

What is the APS certificate, and why does it come first?

Since 2022 every Indian applicant for a German student visa needs an APS India certificate. You apply online, pay INR 18,000, send attested copies of degree certificates and mark sheets, and the Academic Evaluation Centre verifies them with the issuing institutions; the certificate arrives in about three to four weeks and is valid indefinitely. Universities and the missions rely on it, so start the APS process in January for an October start, before admissions arrive. Names, dates and grades on the APS documents must match the passport and the admission letter exactly; inconsistencies are a frequent cause of delay.

How much does it cost?

ItemAmountNotes
National visa fee€75 (about INR 8,300)Paid in rupees at the appointment; €37.50 under 18; not refunded
Blocked account€11,904 for 12 months€992 released monthly; provider set-up fee about €50 to €150
APS certificateINR 18,000Academic Evaluation Centre, New Delhi
Health insuranceAbout €120 to €140 a monthPublic student insurance from arrival until age 30; travel insurance for the visa period
Semester contribution€150 to €400Public universities; Baden-Württemberg charges €1,500 a semester tuition for non-EU students
Residence permit after arrival€100At the local foreigners' office; the visa is usually issued for 6 to 12 months

Public universities in most states charge no tuition, only the semester contribution, which usually includes a regional transport ticket. Vistolane charges the €75 fee at the official rupee rate and shows it on the price card; the blocked account and APS fees are paid directly to the providers.

How much money must I show, and how?

The standard evidence is a blocked account (Sperrkonto) at an approved provider such as Expatrio, Fintiba or Coracle, funded with €11,904 for 2026, which releases €992 a month after you open a German current account. The provider's confirmation letter goes into the file; an account opened but not yet funded is treated as no evidence. Alternatives are a formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a sponsor in Germany obtained at their foreigners' office, or a scholarship letter covering at least the same amount. Education loans are accepted only when the funds are actually transferred to the blocked account; a sanction letter alone is not enough for Germany, unlike the UK or France.

How does the application run?

  1. Apply for the APS certificate online, pay INR 18,000 and send attested documents; receive the certificate in three to four weeks.
  2. Secure the admission, open and fund the blocked account with €11,904, and arrange travel health insurance for the period until public insurance starts at enrolment.
  3. Apply in the Consular Services Portal: choose "Study purposes", answer the questionnaire, upload the documents and complete the pre-check. The portal then lets you book a VFS appointment at the mission responsible for your state.
  4. Attend the appointment with the originals, pay €75 and give fingerprints; expect a short interview about the course and your plans.
  5. After the visa is issued, travel, register your address within two weeks, enrol, open a bank account to receive the blocked funds and apply for the residence permit (€100) before the visa expires.

How long does it take for a winter-semester start?

StageTypical time
APS certificate3 to 4 weeks; start from January
Admission to blocked account funded2 to 3 weeks
Portal pre-check to appointment1 to 4 weeks; slots tighten from June
Appointment to decision4 to 12 weeks; file by June for October
TravelUp to the visa start date; universities allow late enrolment by a few weeks

Students with an enrolment deadline inside the processing window should say so in the portal; the missions prioritise by enrolment date. Summer-semester (April) starts run the same sequence from the previous autumn.

Working, dependants and what comes after

Students may work 140 full days or 280 half days a year, or 20 hours a week during the semester, in addition to student assistant jobs at the university. Spouses can join under family reunion without a German test and work without restriction. After graduation the 18-month job-seeker residence permit allows any work while you look for a position matching your degree.

Graduates then move to the EU Blue Card at the 2026 thresholds of €50,700, or €45,934.20 for shortage occupations and for new entrants within three years of their degree, or to the skilled worker permit at the market salary. Settlement is available after two years of qualified employment for graduates of German universities. The Germany work visa guide covers the Blue Card rules and the Opportunity Card.

Why are Germany student visas refused, and what fixes each reason?

Doubts about the study plan. The course did not fit the academic record, the interview answers were vague, or the mission suspected the real aim was work. Write a specific motivation letter connecting your degree to the program and a career, prepare for the interview, and choose a program that follows from your record.

Funding not secured. Blocked account below €11,904 or not yet confirmed, or a sponsor letter without the formal obligation format. Fund the full amount before the appointment and use the provider's confirmation letter; sponsors in Germany obtain the obligation letter from their foreigners' office.

APS or document problems. Missing APS certificate, unverified mark sheets, or names and dates that differ across documents. Obtain the APS before applying and make sure passport, certificates and admission letter match exactly.

Language or academic fit. English or German below the university's requirement, or an admission the mission considered doubtful. Submit the test the university accepts and an admission letter confirming the language condition is met.

Incomplete portal application. Documents not uploaded, pre-check not completed, or an appointment booked outside the portal process. Complete the Consular Services Portal pre-check before booking; the appointment is refused otherwise.

How Vistolane files it

Vistolane prepares the Consular Services Portal application, checks the APS, blocked account and insurance before the pre-check, books the VFS appointment and charges the €75 fee at the official rate; study-abroad consultants run whole intakes through the same workspace.
