A Germany work visa for an Indian professional in 2026 comes in three forms. The EU Blue Card needs a recognised degree and a job offer of at least six months paying €50,700 a year, or €45,934.20 in shortage occupations, for graduates within three years of their degree and for IT specialists with three years' experience and no degree. The skilled worker permit needs a recognised degree or vocational qualification and a job in a related field at the market salary. The Opportunity Card needs a recognised qualification or six points and €1,091 a month in a blocked account for a one-year job search. All three are national D visas costing €75, applied for through the Consular Services Portal, and the employer-led fast-track procedure (€411) brings the consular stage down to about three weeks.

The compact version with the price card and checklist is on the Germany work visa route page. This article compares the routes, explains recognition and sets out who pays what.

Which Germany work visa route fits an Indian applicant?

Regulated professions such as medicine, nursing, teaching and law need a licence from the German authority before the visa. For other jobs, recognition means the degree is listed as comparable in the anabin database (institution rated H+ and the degree marked equivalent) or a statement of comparability is obtained from the ZAB, which takes about three months and costs €200. Start the recognition check before the job search; it is the single most common cause of delay for Indian applicants.

What changed with the Skilled Immigration Act?

The reforms phased in between November 2023 and June 2024 lowered the Blue Card thresholds, opened the Blue Card to IT specialists without a degree, created the work experience route for people with two years' experience and a qualification recognised in their home country, and introduced the Opportunity Card. Blue Card holders can now change employer after 12 months with a notification only, and the settlement period fell to 27 months (21 with German B1). The 2026 thresholds of €50,700 and €45,934.20 are set each year from the pension contribution ceiling, so an offer close to the line should be checked against the figure that applies on the application date.

Who pays which fee?

ItemAmountPaid by
National visa fee€75 (about INR 8,300)Worker, at the appointment
ZAB statement of comparability€200Worker; about 3 months
Fast-track procedure (section 81a)€411Employer, to the foreigners' office
Residence card after arrival€100Worker, at the foreigners' office
Opportunity Card blocked account€1,091 a month (€13,092 for 12 months)Applicant, unless a part-time job offer covers it

There is no health surcharge; statutory health insurance is deducted from salary from the first day. Employers may not charge workers for recruitment or the fast-track fee. Vistolane charges the €75 fee at the official rupee rate and shows it on the Germany destination page.

How does the application run?

  1. Recognition check: confirm the degree in anabin or order a ZAB statement; regulated professions obtain the licence or a deficit notice first.
  2. Job offer and employment declaration: the employer completes the Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis with salary, hours and duties. For the fast-track route the employer applies at its local foreigners' office, pays €411 and receives a pre-approval that guarantees a consular appointment.
  3. Apply in the Consular Services Portal: choose the visa type (Blue Card sub-type, skilled worker or Opportunity Card), upload the documents, complete the pre-check and book the VFS appointment at the mission for your state.
  4. Appointment and decision: submit the originals, pay €75 and give biometrics. Blue Cards are decided in weeks; skilled worker cases may go to the Federal Employment Agency for approval of the working conditions.
  5. Arrival: register your address, take out health insurance through the employer, and apply for the residence card (€100) before the visa expires. The Blue Card is issued for the contract length plus three months, up to four years.

How long does it take from India?

StageTypical time
Degree recognitionImmediate (anabin) to about 3 months (ZAB)
Portal pre-check to appointment1 to 4 weeks; fast-track cases get guaranteed slots
Appointment to decision2 to 6 weeks (Blue Card); 4 to 10 weeks (skilled worker); about 3 weeks fast track
Entry to residence cardWithin the visa validity, usually 6 months to a year

Plan six to twelve weeks from signed contract to first day for a Blue Card with a recognised degree, and three to four months where a ZAB statement is needed. Indian workers used to the H-1B lottery described in the US H-1B visa guide will notice there is no cap, no lottery and no registration window.

Changing jobs, family and settlement

Blue Card holders can change employer after 12 months without approval; in the first year a notification to the foreigners' office is enough. Unemployment of up to three months does not end the permit if you notify the office. The Blue Card leads to a settlement permit after 27 months of pension contributions, or 21 months with German at B1; skilled worker permit holders settle after three years, and graduates of German universities after two. After 18 months a Blue Card holder can move to another EU state under the mobility rules.

Spouses and children join under family reunion without a German language test and the spouse can work without restriction; the Germany spouse visa guide covers the file. Citizenship is possible after five years (three with exceptional integration) with B1 German and the naturalisation test. Germany has allowed dual citizenship since June 2024, but India does not, so Indian citizens surrender the Indian passport and apply for an OCI card.

Why are Germany work visas refused, and what fixes each reason?

Degree not recognised. The university is not H+ in anabin or the degree is not equivalent, and no ZAB statement was provided. Order the ZAB statement before applying; for IT roles without a recognised degree, use the three-year experience rule at the lower Blue Card threshold.

Salary below the threshold. The offer was under €50,700, or under €45,934.20 where the lower threshold applied. Renegotiate the offer or apply as a skilled worker at the market salary with Federal Employment Agency approval.

Employer or working conditions. The Federal Employment Agency found the salary or hours below the collective or regional standard, or doubted the job was genuine. The employer documents comparable pay and the business need; the fast-track procedure resolves such questions before the consular stage.

Incomplete portal application. Pre-check not completed, documents missing, or an appointment booked outside the portal process. Complete the Consular Services Portal pre-check; applications are not accepted at the counter otherwise.

Opportunity Card funds or points. Blocked account short of €1,091 a month or points not evidenced. Fund the full year and document each point claimed with certificates.

How Vistolane handles it

Work routes on Vistolane go to a licence-checked immigration partner who runs the recognition check, the employer's declaration or fast-track pre-approval and the Consular Services Portal filing, with the €75 fee shown at the official rate. Employers can start from Vistolane for business; applicants start with the free eligibility check or the Germany work visa route page. Workers comparing European options can read the France work visa guide and the UK Skilled Worker guide.
