A France work visa for an Indian professional in 2026 follows one of two tracks. The talent track covers EU Blue Card holders with a contract of at least six months at €59,373 a year, qualified employees with a French master's at €39,582, employees of innovative companies and intra-group assignees at the same €39,582, and researchers with a hosting agreement; the employer needs no work authorisation and pays no foreign-worker tax. The salarié track covers every other job, where the employer first obtains a work authorisation on the ANEF platform with a labour-market test unless the occupation is on the shortage list. Both use a long-stay visa costing €99; the talent card then costs €350 in tax stamps on issue.
The compact version with the price card and checklist is on the France work visa route page. This article compares the routes, explains who pays what and sets out the timeline for each track.
Which France work visa route fits an Indian applicant?
| Route | Qualification | Salary 2026 | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Talent: EU Blue Card | 3 years' higher education or 5 years' comparable experience (3 in listed professions); contract of 6 months or more | €59,373 | Engineers, IT, finance and senior professionals hired from India |
| Talent: qualified employee | Master's or CGE-labelled diploma obtained in France; contract over 3 months | €39,582 | Indian graduates of French schools |
| Talent: employee of an innovative company | Recruited by a jeune entreprise innovante or company recognised as innovative, in an R&D-linked role | €39,582 | Start-up hires |
| Talent: employee on assignment (intra-group) | 3 months' seniority in the group; contract with the French entity | €39,582 | Transfers from Indian offices of French and multinational groups |
| Talent: researcher | Master's and a hosting agreement with an approved institution | €2,200 a month minimum | PhDs and post-docs |
| Salarié (work authorisation) | Any job; employer applies for authorisation with a labour-market test unless the occupation is on the shortage list | Market rate; at least the SMIC (€22,404.20 a year) | Roles below the talent thresholds |
The talent card is issued for up to four years and renewed while the conditions hold. Talent and Blue Card holders who have held a Blue Card in another EU state for a year can apply within a month of entering France. Regulated professions need the French licence first.
What changed for 2026?
The Blue Card threshold of €59,373 follows the order of 21 August 2025 setting the average reference salary; the qualified-employee threshold of €39,582 is tied to the SMIC. The 2024 immigration law raised the French language requirements for residence: A2 for the multi-year card and B1 for the ten-year resident card from 2026, with a civic commitment, although the visa itself has no language test. The Blue Card prefecture decision must now be made within 90 days, with silence treated as a refusal.
Who pays which fee?
| Item | Amount | Paid by |
|---|---|---|
| Long-stay visa (talent or salarié) | €99 | Worker, at VFS in rupees |
| Talent residence card tax | €350 (€50 stamp duty + €300 tax) | Worker, on issue of the card |
| VLS-TS validation (salarié) | €200 tax + €25 stamp duty | Worker, online within 3 months of arrival |
| Employer OFII tax (salarié only) | 55% of one month's gross salary, capped at 2.5 times the SMIC | Employer; not payable for talent routes |
| VFS Global service fee | Set by VFS | Worker |
Vistolane charges the €99 fee at the official rupee rate and shows it on the France destination page. Employers can start from Vistolane for business.
How does the application run?
- Classify the role: check the salary against €59,373 (Blue Card) or €39,582 (qualified employee with a French master's, innovative company or intra-group); otherwise the employer applies for a work authorisation on the ANEF employer platform.
- Employer documents: the employer completes the attestation employeur (talent) from the service-public.gouv.fr template or receives the work authorisation (salarié), and provides the contract, the Kbis registration extract and, for innovative companies, the ministry recognition.
- Complete the France-Visas long-stay wizard for the correct talent sub-type or salarié, book VFS, pay €99 and give biometrics with the contract, diplomas, CV and passport.
- The consulate issues a VLS-TS "talent" for stays under a year or a three-month visa "talent" for longer stays; salarié files receive a VLS-TS "salarié".
- On arrival, talent holders apply online on ANEF within two months for the residence card and pay €350; salarié holders validate the VLS-TS online within three months and pay €225. Family members apply for talent-family cards.
How long does it take from India?
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Work authorisation (salarié only) | About 2 months; labour-market test unless shortage occupation |
| France-Visas form to VFS appointment | 1 to 4 weeks; longer in May and June |
| Appointment to decision | 2 to 4 weeks; talent files are fast-tracked at most posts |
| Arrival to residence card | 2 to 3 months; prefecture decision within 90 days for the Blue Card |
Plan six to eight weeks from signed contract to first day for a talent route and three to four months for a salarié hire needing a work authorisation. There is no cap and no lottery, unlike the H-1B described in the US H-1B visa guide.
Changing jobs, family and settlement
Talent holders can change employer within the same route as long as the conditions still hold; a Blue Card holder who loses a job keeps the card while looking for another. Spouses and minor children receive the talent-family card, which allows work, without the family reunification procedure; the France spouse and family visa guide covers the file. After five years of residence, holders can apply for the ten-year resident card or, for Blue Card holders, long-term EU resident status, with French at B1 and the civic commitment.
Citizenship by naturalisation needs five years' residence (two for graduates of French higher education), French at B1 and the civic test. India does not permit dual citizenship, so Indian citizens surrender the Indian passport and apply for an OCI card.
Why are France work visas refused, and what fixes each reason?
Salary below the threshold. The offer was under €59,373 for the Blue Card or €39,582 for the qualified-employee route. Reclassify to the salarié route with a work authorisation, or renegotiate the contract.
Qualification not matched to the route. A master's from India used for the qualified-employee route, which needs a French diploma, or experience not documented for the Blue Card. Apply under the Blue Card with detailed experience letters, or use the salarié route.
Work authorisation refused (salarié). The labour-market test was not met or the salary was below the collective agreement. The employer re-advertises through France Travail or targets a shortage occupation, and aligns pay with the agreement.
Incomplete employer documents. Missing attestation employeur, Kbis or contract details. Use the official template and attach the company registration extract.
Doubts about the contract or employer. A new company without activity, or a contract inconsistent with the role. Provide the company's activity evidence, client contracts and organisation chart.
How Vistolane handles it
Work routes on Vistolane go to a licence-checked immigration partner who classifies the role, prepares the employer's attestation or work authorisation and files the France-Visas application, with the €99 fee shown at the official rate.
