France work visa for Indian professionals

France's 'talent' residence card lets qualified employees, EU Blue Card holders, researchers and intra-group transferees work without a separate work permit. In 2026 the Blue Card needs a contract of at least six months at €59,373 a year; the qualified-employee route needs a French master's and €39,582. Everyone else uses the standard salarié permit, where the employer obtains a work authorisation first. The long-stay visa costs €99 and the talent card €350 in tax stamps.

France work visa: quick answers

Who qualifies for a French work visa?
Talent EU Blue Card: three years of higher education or five years of comparable experience (three in listed professions), a contract of at least six months and gross pay of €59,373 or more. Talent qualified employee: a master's or equivalent obtained in France and a contract over three months at €39,582 or more; the same salary applies to employees of innovative companies and intra-group assignees with three months' seniority. Salarié permit: any job for which the employer obtains a work authorisation, with a labour-market test unless the occupation is on the shortage list.
What does it cost?
€99 for the long-stay visa, paid in rupees at VFS, plus the VFS service fee. On arrival the talent card costs €350 (€50 stamp duty plus €300 tax) and the employer pays no foreign-worker tax; salarié permit holders validate the VLS-TS online with €200 tax plus €25 stamp duty, and the employer pays the OFII tax of 55 percent of one month's gross salary (capped at 2.5 times the SMIC). Spouses and children of talent holders get the talent-family card without family reunification.
How long does it take from India?
Talent files are decided by the consulate in about two to four weeks after the VFS appointment. Salarié files need the employer's work authorisation first, decided by the regional labour authority within about two months, then the visa in two to four weeks. The prefecture must decide a Blue Card residence application within 90 days; silence is a refusal.

The talent card is issued for up to four years and renewed while the conditions hold; its holder's employer needs no work authorisation and pays no foreign-worker tax. Talent and Blue Card holders who have held a Blue Card in another EU state for a year can apply within a month of entering France. Regulated professions need the French licence first.

How the application runs, step by step

  1. 1

    Classify the role

Check the salary against €59,373 (Blue Card) or €39,582 (qualified employee with a French master's); otherwise the employer applies for a work authorisation on the ANEF employer platform.

  2. 2

    Employer documents

The employer completes the attestation employeur (talent) or receives the work authorisation (salarié) and provides the contract, registration extract and, for innovative companies, the ministry recognition.

  3. 3

    France-Visas form and VFS appointment

Complete the long-stay wizard for the correct talent sub-type or salarié, pay €99 at VFS and give biometrics with the contract, diplomas, CV and passport.

  4. 4

    Decision

The consulate issues a VLS-TS 'talent' for stays under a year or a 3-month visa 'talent' for longer stays; salarié files receive a VLS-TS 'salarié'.

  5. 5

    Arrival

Talent holders apply online on ANEF within two months for the residence card and pay €350; salarié holders validate the VLS-TS online within three months and pay €225. Family members apply for talent-family cards.

Timeline for an Indian applicant

StageTypical timeWhat you do
Work authorisation (salarié only)About 2 monthsEmployer applies on the ANEF platform; labour-market test unless shortage occupation
France-Visas form to VFS appointment1 to 4 weeksLonger in May and June
Appointment to decision2 to 4 weeksTalent files are fast-tracked at most posts
Arrival to residence card2 to 3 monthsANEF application within 2 months; prefecture decision within 90 days for the Blue Card

Plan six to eight weeks from signed contract to first day for a talent route and three to four months for a salarié hire needing a work authorisation.

Changing jobs, family and settlement

Talent holders can change employer within the same route as long as the conditions still hold; a Blue Card holder losing a job keeps the card while looking for another. Spouses and minor children receive the talent-family card, which allows work, without the family reunification procedure. After five years of residence, holders can apply for the ten-year resident card or, for Blue Card holders, long-term EU resident status, with French at A2 (B1 from 2026 for the resident card under the 2024 immigration law) and the civic commitment.

Citizenship by naturalisation needs five years' residence (two for graduates of French higher education), French at B1 and the civic test. India does not permit dual citizenship, so Indian citizens surrender the Indian passport and apply for an OCI card.

Why applications on this route get refused, and the fix

Salary below the threshold

The offer was under €59,373 for the Blue Card or €39,582 for the qualified-employee route.

The fix. Reclassify to the salarié route with a work authorisation, or renegotiate the contract.

Qualification not matched to the route

A master's from India used for the qualified-employee route, which needs a French diploma, or experience not documented for the Blue Card.

The fix. Apply under the Blue Card with experience letters or the salarié route.

Work authorisation refused (salarié)

The labour-market test was not met or the salary was below the collective agreement.

The fix. The employer re-advertises through France Travail or targets a shortage occupation; align pay with the agreement.

Incomplete employer documents

Missing attestation employeur, Kbis or contract details.

The fix. Use the official template and attach the company registration extract.

Doubts about the contract or employer

A new company without activity, or a contract inconsistent with the role.

The fix. Provide the company's activity evidence, client contracts and organisation chart.
