Indian citizens need a Schengen visa for Italy. The type C visa costs EUR 90 per adult (EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, free under 6), is lodged at a VFS Global Italy centre in India and is decided by the Embassy in New Delhi or the consulates in Mumbai and Kolkata within 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 in peak season. It allows up to 90 days in any 180 across the 29 Schengen states, and Italy publishes the exact funds you must show for each day of stay.
The short version with the price card and checklist is on the Italy Schengen visa route page. This article is the long version: the funds table, the documents that matter to an Italian consular officer, the realistic timeline from India and the five refusal reasons that come up again and again.
Do Indians need a visa for Italy?
Yes. The Italy visa for Indians on a short trip is the Schengen type C visa: Indian ordinary passport holders need it for tourism, business meetings, trade fairs, conferences, visiting family or friends and medical visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa issued by Italy is valid in every Schengen state, but Italy must be the main destination, measured by the number of nights, or the first point of entry when the nights are equal. A traveller spending eight nights in Rome and Florence and three in Paris applies to Italy; one spending seven nights in France and three in Italy applies to France, even if the flight lands in Milan.
Stays over 90 days, study, work, family reunification and remote work need a national type D visa, covered in the Italy student visa guide, the Italy work visa guide and the Italy digital nomad visa guide. A type C visa cannot be converted into a residence permit inside Italy except in narrow cases such as marriage to an Italian citizen.
How much does an Italy visa cost for Indians?
| Item | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Schengen visa, adult | EUR 90 | Paid in INR at the VFS counter at the embassy rate; not refunded |
| Schengen visa, child aged 6 to 11 | EUR 45 | Free for children under 6 |

How much money do I need to show for an Italy visa?
Italy is one of the few Schengen states that publishes a legal funds table, issued by the Ministry of the Interior and applied by every consulate. The amounts are per person and depend on the length of stay:
| Length of stay | Funds required per person |
|---|---|
| 1 to 5 days | EUR 269.60 fixed |
| 6 to 10 days | EUR 44.93 per day |
| 11 to 20 days | EUR 51.64 fixed plus EUR 36.67 per day |
| Over 20 days | EUR 206.58 fixed plus EUR 27.89 per day |
A couple on a 12-night trip therefore needs about EUR 1,000 between them for the table alone, on top of flights and hotels already paid. Officers look at three months of bank statements, the last three salary slips and the latest income tax return, and they read the pattern, not just the closing balance: a lump sum credited a week before the appointment is a classic reason for refusal. A sponsor in India (a parent or spouse) adds their own statements and a signed undertaking; a host in Italy adds a dichiarazione di ospitalità with a copy of their identity document and, if they are covering costs, their own bank evidence.
What documents does the Italy Schengen visa need?
Identity and forms. A passport valid for at least three months beyond the return date, issued within the last ten years, with two blank pages; previous passports showing old visas; the application form generated on vistoperitalia.esteri.it and signed; one photo 35 by 45 mm on a white background taken within six months.
Trip. A return flight reservation within the visa validity, hotel bookings for every night or the host's invitation and hospitality declaration, travel insurance with EUR 30,000 medical cover valid across Schengen for the whole stay, and a short itinerary showing Italy as the main destination. Business travellers add the Indian employer's letter and the Italian company's invitation; conference delegates add the registration.
Funds and ties. Three months of bank statements meeting the table, the last three salary slips and the income tax return (or GST and business registration for the self-employed), the employer's leave letter stating designation, salary and dates, and evidence of return such as property papers, a spouse and children in India or school enrolment. Students attach a bona fide certificate and a parent's financial documents. The travel document checklist helps you tick these off before you book VFS.
How does the application run?
- Check the funds table for your dates and build the itinerary with Italy as the main destination.
- Complete the form on vistoperitalia.esteri.it, choosing the purpose and the jurisdiction (New Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata) for your state of residence, and print it.
- Book a VFS Global Italy appointment and lodge the file: fingerprints and photo (unless taken within the last 59 months), form, passport, documents, EUR 90 fee and the VFS fee.
- Wait for the decision, 15 calendar days by law and up to 45 in peak season; the consulate may ask for more documents or call you for an interview.
- Collect the passport by courier or at the centre and travel, entering through Italy or declaring Italy as the main destination; keep the bookings and insurance for the border.
Fingerprints are stored in the Visa Information System for 59 months, so repeat applicants within that window may lodge through a VFS representative without attending.
How long does an Italy visa take from India?
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Documents, statements, bookings | 1 to 2 weeks |
| VFS appointment wait | Days in winter; up to 4 weeks from April to July |
| Consulate processing | 10 to 20 days; up to 45 in peak season |
| Passport return | 2 to 4 days |
| Validity | Matches the trip; 2 or 5 years under the cascade |
Indian school holidays in May and June coincide with the Italian summer peak, so book VFS as soon as the flights are chosen. Applications can be lodged up to six months before travel and should be in at least 15 working days before departure.
What happens at the border and during the stay?
Officers at Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa and Venice check the passport, the visa, the return ticket, the accommodation and the funds, and record the entry; the EU Entry/Exit System replaces the stamp with a biometric record. The 90-in-180 count covers every Schengen state, so days in France, Switzerland or Austria on the same visa count toward the total; the Schengen visa step-by-step guide explains the calculator. Visitors may attend meetings, conferences and trade fairs but may not work or be paid in Italy, and an overstay is recorded in the Entry/Exit System and weighs on every future Schengen application.
Why are Italy Schengen visas refused, and what fixes each reason?
Purpose or conditions of stay not justified. Bookings missing for some nights or hotel dates that do not match the flights. Book every night, align the dates and attach a day-by-day plan.
Insufficient means of subsistence. Funds below the Ministry of the Interior table or a late lump sum. Show three months of statements that meet the table from the first page, and add a sponsor's documents if your own income is modest.
Intention to leave not established. Weak employment or family ties, long gaps in travel history or a first Schengen trip of several weeks. Add the employer letter, income tax return, property and family evidence; consider a shorter first trip.
Insurance inadequate. Cover under EUR 30,000 or not valid in all Schengen states. Buy a Schengen-compliant policy for the whole stay before the appointment.
Wrong main destination. More nights in another Schengen state than in Italy. Apply to the country where you spend the most nights. The Schengen refusal and reapplying guide covers the appeal to the TAR Lazio within 60 days and when a fresh application is faster.
