Italy's digital nomad visa, open since April 2024, admits highly qualified remote workers and freelancers who earn about EUR 28,000 a year, hold a degree or three years of professional experience with at least six months of remote work, and have health insurance, accommodation and a clean record. The type D visa costs EUR 116 at VFS Global Italy, decisions take one to three months, and the residence permit (about EUR 156 with the contribution) is issued for a year and renewed while the conditions hold.
The short version with the price card and checklist is on the Italy digital nomad visa route page. This article is the long version: how the income formula works, what "highly qualified" means in practice, the evidence Indian applicants need, the costs, the tax position after 183 days and the reasons files are refused.
Who qualifies for the Italy digital nomad visa?
Non-EU citizens who work remotely with digital tools, either as employees of a company outside Italy (including Indian employers) or as freelancers for clients outside Italy, and who count as highly qualified under the decree of 29 February 2024. The tests are:
| Requirement | What it means | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Remote work | Employee of a non-Italian company or freelancer for non-Italian clients, using digital tools | Contract or client agreements; employer letter authorising remote work from Italy |
| Highly qualified | Degree, recognised professional qualification or 3 years' professional experience | Degree with declaration of value or CIMEA statement, or experience letters |
| Experience in the role | At least 6 months of remote work | Payslips or invoices; employer confirmation |
| Income | About EUR 28,000 a year (3 times the health-care exemption threshold) | 12 months of payslips or invoices and bank statements; Indian ITR |
| Insurance | Health cover in Italy for the whole stay | Policy certificate |
| Accommodation | Lease, purchase deed or host's declaration | Registered contract |
| Good conduct | No conviction in 5 years for immigration or labour offences; employer declares the same | Indian PCC; employer declaration |
The visa is for people who will live in Italy while working for the rest of the world. Work for Italian clients is not covered beyond incidental amounts, and anyone hired by an Italian company moves to a work permit through the routes in the Italy work visa guide.
How much income is required, and how is it calculated?
The law sets income at three times the annual threshold for exemption from health-care co-payments, a figure that moves each year. The Ministry's integration portal illustrates the formula with EUR 24,789, consulates in India in 2026 quote EUR 25,500 to 30,000, and most practitioners work to EUR 28,000. Indian applicants should budget for EUR 30,000 to be safe, shown as regular monthly credits from the employer or clients over the last 12 months together with the Indian income tax return. Employees need a letter from the employer confirming the remote arrangement, the salary and that the company has no convictions for immigration or labour offences; freelancers show contracts, invoices and GST or MSME registration. Irregular income, cash receipts or a sudden jump in the last two months are the most common reasons the consulate asks for more.
How much does it cost?
| Item | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Type D digital nomad visa | EUR 116 | Paid in INR at VFS; not refunded |
| VFS Global service fee | About INR 2,000 | Per application |
| Residence permit kit | EUR 116.46 + EUR 40 contribution | Within 8 days of arrival; renewed yearly |
| Health insurance | EUR 300 to 1,000 a year | Private, covering Italy; SSN registration about EUR 2,000 a year once resident |
| Degree declaration of value or CIMEA statement | EUR 150 to 300 | If relying on the degree |
| Indian police clearance certificate | INR 500 plus apostille | Issued within 6 months |
Compared with a Schengen visa (EUR 90 for 90 days, covered in the Italy Schengen visa guide), the nomad visa costs little more and gives a renewable year of residence. Vistolane charges the EUR 116 visa fee at the official rate and shows insurance, legalisation and permit costs separately on the Italy destination page.
How does the application run?
- Assemble 12 months of income evidence: payslips or invoices, bank statements, the Indian ITR, the employer letter or client contracts, and the degree or experience letters.
- Arrange accommodation and insurance: a registered lease or host's declaration and a health policy covering Italy for the first year.
- Lodge the type D application at VFS Global Italy with the form, photo, passport, police clearance certificate and documents; pay EUR 116; an interview is possible.
- Wait one to three months for the decision; consulates often request employer declarations or tax documents, and a quick reply keeps the file moving.
- Arrive and, within eight days, file the residence permit kit at the post office; obtain a codice fiscale, register your residence and, if wanted, register with the SSN.
How long does it take from India?
| Stage | Typical time | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Income history | 12 months | Regular credits at or above EUR 28,000 a year |
| Documents and legalisation | 3 to 6 weeks | PCC, degree, translations |
| Consulate decision | 1 to 3 months | Respond to requests quickly |
| Residence permit | File within 8 days; card in 1 to 3 months | Receipt allows travel |
| Renewal | Yearly | Same income and insurance tests |
Apply two to four months before the move. The visa is issued for entry within a defined window, so align the lease start with the expected decision rather than the application date. The processing times page tracks the current consulate turnaround.
What about tax, family and the long term?
Anyone present 183 days or more in a calendar year is tax resident in Italy on worldwide income at 23 to 43 per cent, with credit under the India-Italy double tax treaty. New residents who have not been Italian tax resident in the previous three years can claim the impatriate regime, which exempts 50 per cent of employment or self-employment income up to EUR 600,000 for five years for qualifying workers. Freelancers register a partita IVA and may use the 15 per cent flat regime up to EUR 85,000 of revenue where the conditions are met. Employees of Indian companies need the employer to address Italian social security, which the India-Italy social security agreement eases for postings.
The permit is renewed yearly while the income, insurance and remote work continue, and time counts fully toward the five years for the EU long-term residence permit. Spouses and children join through family cohesion with the social allowance income test, as explained in the Italy family reunification guide, and children attend state schools free. Nomads who take an Italian job convert to a work permit, including the EU Blue Card.
Why are Italy digital nomad visas refused, and what fixes each reason?
Income not evidenced. Credits below the threshold or irregular, or no income tax return. Show 12 months of regular credits and the ITR; aim for EUR 30,000.
Not highly qualified. No degree and under three years' experience, or under six months of remote work. Document the experience with letters and payslips; wait until the six months are complete.
Italian clients. Work described for Italian companies. Describe only foreign employers or clients; Italian work needs a work permit.
Insurance or accommodation missing. A policy not covering Italy or no registered lease. Buy compliant insurance and register the lease or declaration.
Employer declaration absent. No statement on remote work authorisation or convictions. Obtain a signed letter on letterhead covering both points.
How Vistolane files it
