A France Schengen visa for an Indian passport holder costs €90, covers tourism, family visits, business and conferences for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area, and is normally decided within 15 calendar days of the VFS Global appointment. France issues more Schengen visas to Indians than any other member state, publishes clear daily-funds references (€65 a day with a hotel, €32.50 with a host's attestation d'accueil), requires travel medical insurance of €30,000, and offers a formal appeal route through the CRRV in Nantes. This guide covers who qualifies, what goes into the file, how the weeks run and what each refusal ground means.
The short version with the price card and checklist is on the France Schengen visitor visa route page. This article is the long version with the reasoning behind each document.
Who needs a France Schengen visa in 2026?
Every Indian passport holder visiting France or entering the Schengen area through France for up to 90 days needs the uniform Schengen visa (type C). France is the right consulate if it is the main destination of the trip by nights or by purpose, or the first point of entry when stays in several countries are equal. Indian citizens holding a valid US, Canadian, UK, Japanese or Schengen visa can transit airside at Paris without a visa; others need an airport transit visa (type A, €90).
The visa allows meetings, trade fairs and short training that is not employment; it does not allow work, and it cannot be converted into a residence permit inside France except in narrow cases. Study, work and family stays need a long-stay visa applied for from India.
What does the consulate actually decide?
The French consulate applies the Visa Code: it checks the purpose and conditions of the stay, the means to pay for it and to return, that you are not an alert in the Schengen Information System, and that you will leave before the visa expires. Purpose is shown with hotel bookings and an itinerary for tourism, the attestation d'accueil issued by the host's town hall together with the host's ID and residence permit for family visits, an invitation from the French company for business, and the registration for conferences.
Funds are judged against France's published references: €65 a day with hotel bookings, €32.50 a day when staying with a host who provides an attestation d'accueil, and €120 a day with no accommodation proof. Six months of statements with regular income and a return ticket reservation are expected. Ties to India are read from the employer's leave letter, business registration, property and family documents. Every previous refusal by a Schengen state appears in the Visa Information System and must be declared.
How much does it cost?
| Item | EUR | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Schengen visa, adult (12 and over) | 90 | Per person; not refunded on refusal |
| Schengen visa, child 6 to 11 | 45 | Children under 6 free |
| Airport transit visa (type A) | 90 | Only where no exempting visa is held |
| VFS Global service fee | Set by VFS | Per application in rupees; premium lounge, courier and form-filling extra |
| Travel medical insurance | Market rate | Minimum €30,000 across Schengen for the whole stay |
The fee is the same for single and multiple entry and is paid when the file is lodged. Vistolane charges the government fee at the official rupee rate and shows it separately on the France destination page.
What documents go in the file?
Forms and identity. A passport valid at least three months beyond the planned departure from Schengen, issued within the last ten years and with two blank pages; previous passports with Schengen, UK or US visas; the signed France-Visas form, the receipt and the VFS appointment letter; one biometric photo, 35 by 45 mm on a white background.
Purpose and stay. A flight reservation and hotel bookings covering every night, or the original attestation d'accueil that the host obtains from their town hall, sent with the host's ID and residence proof; for business, an invitation from the French company naming the dates, the purpose and who pays; travel medical insurance of at least €30,000 valid in all Schengen states for the whole stay.
Funds and ties. Bank statements for six months and income tax returns for two years, with salary credits visible and a balance that meets the daily reference for the trip length; an employer letter with designation, salary and approved leave dates, or GST or incorporation papers for the self-employed; marriage and birth certificates and property documents. The travel document checklist helps you tick items off before the appointment.
How does the application run?
- Complete the France-Visas form. The online wizard confirms the visa type and produces the form, the receipt and a personalised document list; print and sign the form.
- Book the VFS appointment at the centre for your jurisdiction: New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Goa or Puducherry. Each traveller needs an appointment.
- Lodge the file and give biometrics. Fingerprints are taken unless captured for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months. Pay the €90 fee and the service charge.
- The consulate decides within 15 days in normal cases; track the passport on the VFS site. A refusal comes with the standard Schengen form stating the grounds and the appeal route.
- Travel. Enter through any Schengen state, keep France as the main destination, and register fingerprints and face in the EU Entry/Exit System at the first border crossing.
How long does it take from India?
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Documents gathered | 1 to 2 weeks |
| VFS appointment | 1 to 5 weeks; longest in May and June |
| Decision | 15 calendar days; up to 45 for peak-season and first-time files |
| Passport return | 2 to 5 days by courier or collection |
Apply six to eight weeks before a summer trip and four weeks at other times. France-Visas guidance allows filing three months before travel (six months under the Visa Code) and requires lodging at least 15 days before departure.
What happens at the border and during the stay?
The 90-in-180 rule counts every day spent in any Schengen state; use the European Commission's short-stay calculator before planning repeat trips. Since the Entry/Exit System replaced passport stamps, the count is tracked electronically and overstays are detected automatically. Border officers can ask for the return ticket, insurance, accommodation and funds.
Compliant use of short-stay visas is what qualifies you for multi-year visas. Under the cascade adapted for India in 2024, two visas used lawfully within three years lead to a two-year multiple-entry visa and then a five-year visa, subject to passport validity. France also offers a five-year short-stay visa to Indian graduates of French master's programs, described in the France student visa guide.
Why are France Schengen visas refused, and what fixes each reason?
Purpose or conditions of stay not justified. Bookings that did not match the itinerary, a missing attestation d'accueil, or an unclear plan. Submit a day-by-day itinerary that matches confirmed bookings and a cover letter; hosts obtain the attestation d'accueil before the appointment.
Insufficient means of subsistence. Balances below the daily reference, recent lump sums, or a sponsor without documents. Show six months of statements with regular income at or above €65 a day, explain large credits, and add the sponsor's statements and attestation.
Intention to leave not established. Weak ties to India: unemployment, no family or property, long gaps in travel history. Provide the employer letter with approved leave, business evidence, property and family documents, and keep the trip short and specific.
False or unreliable documents. An unverifiable booking, employer letter or statement; a Schengen alert may follow and bars entry to every member state. Use only verifiable documents and declare every previous refusal in the Visa Information System.
Insurance or passport validity. Cover below €30,000 or not matching the dates; passport validity under three months after departure. Buy compliant insurance for the exact dates and renew the passport before applying.
Unlike Germany, France keeps a formal appeal: within 30 days of the refusal you can ask the consulate to reconsider or appeal to the CRRV in Nantes, and then to the Administrative Court of Nantes. A new application with a stronger file is usually faster.
How Vistolane files it
Vistolane completes the France-Visas form, books VFS appointments across the centres in your jurisdiction, checks the file against the consulate's list and charges the €90 fee at the official rate. Start with the free eligibility check or open the France Schengen visa route page. Travellers deciding between missions can read the Germany Schengen visa guide, which follows the same Visa Code with Germany's own funds reference.
