Netherlands Schengen visa for Indian passport holders
Indian citizens need a Schengen visa for the Netherlands: EUR 90 per adult (EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, free under 6), lodged at a VFS Global Netherlands centre in India and decided by the Embassy in New Delhi within 15 calendar days, extendable to 45. The Dutch benchmark for funds is EUR 55 per person per day, and visitors staying with friends or family submit the embassy's proof of sponsorship and accommodation form signed by the host. The visa allows 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen area, and the cascade for India grants two-year and then five-year multiple-entry visas to travellers with two visas in three years.

Netherlands schengen visa: quick answers
- Do Indians need a visa for the Netherlands?
- Yes. Indian ordinary passport holders need a short-stay Schengen visa (type C) for tourism, business, visiting family or friends, conferences and medical treatment of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A visa issued by the Netherlands is valid in all 29 Schengen states, and the Netherlands must be the main destination or the first point of entry when stays are equal. Study, work, family and the orientation year use the IND's residence permits with an MVV entry visa, covered on the other Netherlands route pages.
- What does it cost?
- EUR 90 per adult and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11 (free under 6), paid in rupees at the VFS counter at the embassy's exchange rate (about INR 9,600 in 2026), plus the VFS service fee of about INR 1,900 and optional courier, SMS and lounge charges. The fee is not refunded on refusal. Vistolane charges the EUR 90 fee at the official rate and shows its service separately.
- How long does it take from India?
- The Visa Code allows 15 calendar days from lodging, extendable to 45 when more checks are needed; the Dutch embassy decides most Indian tourist files in 7 to 15 days outside the summer peak and 15 to 30 days from April to July. VFS appointments open about three months ahead and fill fast for May and June, so start six to eight weeks before travel and no earlier than six months.

Who qualifies, and how the embassy assesses a tourist file
Any Indian passport holder with a passport valid three months beyond the return date, issued within ten years and with two blank pages can apply. The embassy assesses purpose, funds and intention to return: confirmed flights, hotel bookings for every night or the host's proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation form (legalised at the host's municipality for sponsorship), travel insurance with EUR 30,000 of medical cover, and ties in India through employment, business, property or family. Business visitors add the Dutch company's invitation and the Indian employer's letter; visitors to relatives add the relationship documents and the host's residence permit or passport.
The Netherlands applies a benchmark of EUR 55 per person per day for the stay, shown on three months of bank statements with salary slips and the latest income tax return, or covered by a host who signs the sponsorship form and attaches three months of Dutch payslips (at least the statutory minimum wage) and ID. Students add a bona fide certificate and a parent's documents.
Under the Schengen cascade for India in force since 18 April 2024, applicants with two visas used in the last three years can receive a two-year multiple-entry visa and then a five-year visa at the same fee; frequent business travellers can ask for it with an employer letter. Fingerprints are stored for 59 months, so repeat applicants within that window can lodge through a representative at VFS.

Timeline for an Indian traveller
| Stage | Typical time | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Documents | 1 to 2 weeks | Statements, ITR, employer letter, bookings or sponsorship form |
| VFS appointment | Days to 4 weeks | Longest from April to July |
| Embassy processing | 7 to 15 days; up to 45 | Extra documents or interview possible |
| Passport return | 2 to 4 days | Courier or collection |
| Validity | Matches the trip; 2 or 5 years under the cascade | Apply up to 6 months ahead |
Tulip season in April and the Indian summer holidays in May and June are the slowest; book VFS early for those months.
At the border and during the stay
Border officers at Schiphol check the passport, visa, return ticket, accommodation and funds and record the entry; the EU Entry/Exit System replaces passport stamps with a biometric record. The 90-in-180 count covers all Schengen states, so days in Belgium, Germany or France on the same visa count against the total.
Visitors may attend meetings, conferences and trade fairs but may not work or be paid in the Netherlands. A Schengen visa cannot be converted into a residence permit inside the country; students, workers, families and graduates use the IND routes with an MVV, applied for by the sponsor in the Netherlands and collected at the embassy in New Delhi.
