Indian citizens need a Schengen visa for the Netherlands. The type C visa costs EUR 90 per adult (EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, free under 6), is lodged at a VFS Global Netherlands centre in India and is decided by the Embassy in New Delhi within 15 calendar days, extendable to 45. The Dutch benchmark for funds is EUR 55 per person per day, and visitors staying with friends or family submit the embassy's proof of sponsorship and accommodation form signed by the host. The visa allows 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen area.

The short version with the price card and checklist is on the Netherlands Schengen visa route page. This article is the long version: the funds benchmark, how the sponsorship form works, the documents the embassy weighs, the timeline from India and the refusal reasons that recur.

Do Indians need a visa for the Netherlands?

Yes. The Netherlands visa for Indians on a short trip is the Schengen type C visa, required for tourism, business, visiting family or friends, conferences and medical treatment of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A visa issued by the Netherlands is valid in all 29 Schengen states, but the Netherlands must be the main destination by number of nights, or the first point of entry when the nights are equal. A traveller spending five nights in Amsterdam and two in Brussels applies to the Netherlands; one touring Germany for a week and spending two nights in Amsterdam applies to Germany, even if the flight lands at Schiphol.

Study, work, family and the post-study orientation year do not use a visa in the Schengen sense: the sponsor in the Netherlands applies to the IND for a residence permit with an MVV entry visa, covered in the Netherlands student visa guide, the Netherlands highly skilled migrant guide and the Netherlands partner and family visa guide. A Schengen visa cannot be converted into a residence permit inside the country.

How much money do I need to show, and how does the sponsorship form work?

The Netherlands applies a benchmark of EUR 55 per person per day for the stay: about EUR 770 for a two-week trip, on top of flights and hotels already paid. Officers read three months of bank statements, the last three salary slips and the income tax return or business documents, looking for a steady pattern rather than a closing balance; a lump sum credited a week before the appointment is the classic means-of-subsistence refusal.

Visitors staying with family or friends use the embassy's proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation form (bewijs van garantstelling en/of particuliere logiesverstrekking). The host signs it and, when they are covering costs, has the signature legalised at their municipality and attaches three months of Dutch payslips at or above the statutory minimum wage, a copy of their passport or residence permit and, for private accommodation, a recent extract from the municipal register. A properly completed form replaces the applicant's own funds evidence, which makes it the most important document in a family-visit file and the one most often returned incomplete.

What documents does the Netherlands Schengen visa need?

Identity and forms. A passport valid three months beyond the return date, issued within the last ten years, with two blank pages; previous passports with old visas; the online Schengen form, printed and signed; one photo 35 by 45 mm on a white background taken within six months.

Trip. A return flight reservation within the visa validity, hotel bookings for every night or the host's sponsorship form, travel insurance with EUR 30,000 medical cover across Schengen for the whole stay, and an itinerary showing the Netherlands as the main destination. Business visitors add the Dutch company's invitation and the Indian employer's letter; visitors to relatives add the relationship documents and the host's residence permit or passport.

Funds and ties. Three months of bank statements meeting EUR 55 a day, the last three salary slips and the income tax return (or GST and business registration), the employer's leave letter with designation, salary and dates, and evidence of return such as property, family or school enrolment. Students add a bona fide certificate and a parent's documents. The travel document checklist helps you tick these off before you book VFS.

How does the application run?

  1. Check the funds benchmark for your dates and build the itinerary with the Netherlands as the main destination, or have the host complete and legalise the sponsorship form.
  2. Complete the online Schengen form, print it and book a VFS Global Netherlands appointment for each traveller.
  3. Lodge the file at VFS: fingerprints and photo (unless taken within the last 59 months), form, passport, documents, the EUR 90 fee and the VFS fee.
  4. Wait for the decision, 15 calendar days by law and up to 45 in peak season; the embassy may request documents or an interview.
  5. Collect the passport and travel, entering through Schiphol or declaring the Netherlands as the main destination; carry bookings, insurance and proof of funds for the border.

Fingerprints are stored in the Visa Information System for 59 months, so a repeat applicant within that window can lodge through a representative at VFS.

How long does a Netherlands visa take from India?

StageTypical time
Documents, statements, bookings or sponsorship form1 to 2 weeks
VFS appointment waitDays in winter; up to 4 weeks from April to July
Embassy processing7 to 15 days; up to 45 in peak season
Passport return2 to 4 days
ValidityMatches the trip; 2 or 5 years under the cascade

Tulip season in April and the Indian summer holidays in May and June are the slowest periods, so book VFS early for those months. Applications can be lodged up to six months before travel and should be in at least 15 working days before departure; the processing times page tracks the current turnaround.

What happens at the border and during the stay?

Officers at Schiphol check the passport, the visa, the return ticket, accommodation and funds, and record the entry; the EU Entry/Exit System replaces passport stamps with a biometric record. The 90-in-180 count covers all Schengen states, so days in Belgium, Germany or France on the same visa count toward the total; the Schengen visa step-by-step guide explains the calculator. Visitors may attend meetings, conferences and trade fairs but may not work or be paid in the Netherlands, and an overstay recorded in the Entry/Exit System weighs on every future Schengen application.

Why are Netherlands Schengen visas refused, and what fixes each reason?

Purpose or conditions of stay not justified. Bookings missing for some nights or inconsistent with the flights. Book every night, align the dates and attach a day-by-day plan.

Insufficient means of subsistence. Funds below EUR 55 a day or a late lump sum. Show three months of statements meeting the benchmark, or add a host's legalised sponsorship form.

Intention to leave not established. Weak employment or family ties, long gaps in travel history or a first Schengen trip of several weeks. Add the employer letter, income tax return, property and family evidence; consider a shorter first trip.

Sponsorship form incomplete. The host's form not legalised at the municipality, or payslips missing. Have the host legalise the signature and attach three months of payslips and ID.

Wrong main destination. More nights in another Schengen state than in the Netherlands. Apply to the country where you spend the most nights. The Schengen refusal and reapplying guide covers the free written objection within four weeks and when a fresh application is quicker.
