Indian citizens need a Schengen visa for Switzerland. The type C visa costs CHF 90 per adult (the EUR 90 Schengen fee charged in Swiss francs; CHF 45 for children aged 6 to 11, free under 6), is lodged at a VFS Global Switzerland centre in India and is decided within 15 calendar days by the embassy in New Delhi or the consulates general in Mumbai or Bengaluru, depending on where you live. Switzerland is a Schengen state but not an EU member, so the visa follows the EU Visa Code: 90 days in any 180 across all 29 Schengen states, EUR 30,000 of medical insurance and Switzerland as the main destination. The Swiss benchmark for funds is about CHF 100 a day.
The short version with the price card and checklist is on the Switzerland Schengen visa route page. This article is the long version: how jurisdiction works between the three Swiss representations, the funds benchmark, the sponsor's guarantee, documents, the timeline from India and the refusal reasons. The general mechanics of a Schengen application are in the Schengen visa step-by-step guide; this guide covers what is specific to Switzerland.
Do Indians need a visa for Switzerland?
Yes. The Switzerland visa for Indians on a short trip is the Schengen type C visa, required for tourism, business meetings, visiting family or friends, conferences, short courses and medical treatment of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Switzerland joined the Schengen area in 2008 without joining the EU, so the same visa admits you to Germany, France, Italy and Austria and a visa from any of those admits you to Switzerland, provided the main destination rule is respected. The country where you spend the most nights decides; a traveller spending five nights in Interlaken and two in Paris applies to Switzerland, while one touring Italy for a week with two nights in Zurich applies to Italy, as the Italy Schengen visa guide explains.
Study, work and family reunification do not use the type C visa: they need a national type D visa issued after cantonal approval, covered in the Switzerland student visa guide, the Switzerland work permit guide and the Switzerland family reunification guide. A Schengen visa cannot be converted into a permit inside Switzerland.
How much does a Switzerland visa cost for Indians?
| Item | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Schengen visa, adult | CHF 90 | EUR 90 in Swiss francs; paid in INR at VFS; not refunded |
| Schengen visa, child aged 6 to 11 | CHF 45 | Free for children under 6 |
| VFS Global service fee | About INR 2,000 | Per application; courier, SMS and lounge extra |
| Travel insurance | Market rate | EUR 30,000 medical cover valid in all Schengen states |
| Multiple-entry visa under the cascade | CHF 90 | Same fee for 1-year, 3-year and 5-year visas |

The Schengen fee rose from EUR 80 to EUR 90 on 11 June 2024 and Switzerland adopted it at CHF 90. Vistolane charges the CHF 90 fee at the official rate, books VFS and shows its service separately on the Switzerland destination page.
How much money do I need to show, and how does the guarantee work?
The Swiss representations apply about CHF 100 per person per day for tourists, or CHF 30 a day for students who hold a sponsor's guarantee, on top of flights and accommodation already paid. For a 10-day trip that is roughly CHF 1,000 per traveller shown on 3 months of bank statements with regular income, the last 3 payslips and the income tax return or business documents. Officers look for the pattern of funds, not a closing balance; a lump sum credited in the fortnight before the appointment is the most common means-of-subsistence refusal.
Visitors staying with family or friends in Switzerland can submit a declaration of sponsorship (Verpflichtungserklärung / déclaration de prise en charge), which the host completes at their cantonal or communal migration office; the host commits to costs up to CHF 30,000 and shows their income and residence status. A properly stamped declaration replaces much of the applicant's own funds evidence but never the evidence of ties to India, which the officer still weighs.
What documents does the Switzerland Schengen visa need?
Identity and forms. A passport valid 3 months beyond the return date, issued within 10 years, with 2 blank pages; previous passports; the Schengen application form completed online or by hand and signed; one photo 35 by 45 mm on a light background taken within 6 months.
Trip. Return flight reservation, hotel bookings for every night or the host's sponsorship declaration, travel insurance with EUR 30,000 medical cover across Schengen for the whole stay, a day-by-day itinerary showing Switzerland as the main destination and, for business, the Swiss company's invitation and the Indian employer's letter. Swiss Travel Pass or rail bookings strengthen a tourist file.
Funds and ties. Three months of bank statements meeting about CHF 100 a day, 3 payslips and the income tax return (or GST and business registration), the employer's leave letter with designation, salary and dates, and evidence of return such as property, family or school enrolment. The travel document checklist helps you tick these off before you book.
How does the application run?
- Build the itinerary with Switzerland as the main destination, book refundable flights and hotels, and arrange insurance; or have the host complete the sponsorship declaration at their migration office.
- Complete the Schengen form, print and sign it, and book a VFS Global Switzerland appointment in your jurisdiction (New Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru region) for each traveller.
- Lodge the file at VFS: fingerprints and photo (unless taken within the last 59 months), form, passport, documents, the CHF 90 fee and the VFS fee in rupees.
- Wait for the decision, 15 calendar days by law and up to 45 in peak season; the representation may request documents or an interview.
- Collect the passport and travel; enter through Zurich or Geneva or declare Switzerland as the main destination at the first Schengen border; carry bookings, insurance and funds evidence.
How long does a Switzerland visa take from India?
| Stage | Typical time | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Documents | 1 to 2 weeks | Statements, letters, bookings |
| VFS appointment | 1 to 3 weeks | Slots fill from April to July |
| Decision | 7 to 15 days; up to 45 in peak | Answer requests promptly |
| Passport return | 2 to 4 days | Courier or collection |
| Travel | Within the visa dates | Multiple entry if granted |
Frequent travellers with two previous Schengen visas used correctly receive 1-year multiple-entry visas under the cascade, then 2-year and 5-year visas, at the same CHF 90 fee.
What happens at the border and during the stay?
Border officers verify the visa, the purpose, funds and insurance, and the stay is counted against the 90-in-180 rule across all Schengen states. Visitors may not work or study beyond short courses, and overstaying is recorded in the Schengen Information System. Refusals come with a standard form listing the grounds; an appeal lies to the SEM within 30 days with a CHF 200 advance on costs, but reapplying with a corrected file is usually faster. The Schengen refusal and reapplying guide explains the grounds.
Why are Switzerland Schengen visas refused, and what fixes each reason?
Means of subsistence not proven. Statements below the CHF 100 a day benchmark or a recent lump sum. Show 3 months of regular balances, add payslips and the tax return, or a host's sponsorship declaration.
Purpose and conditions not reliable. Itinerary inconsistent with bookings, or Switzerland not the main destination. Align the itinerary, nights and bookings and apply to the right state.
Intention to leave in doubt. Weak employment, no property or family ties. Add the employer letter, tax returns and family evidence; keep the trip proportionate.
Insurance inadequate. Cover under EUR 30,000 or not valid across Schengen. Buy a Schengen-compliant policy for the whole stay.
Host's declaration missing or incomplete. Sponsorship not stamped by the migration office. Have the host complete it before you book VFS.
