A Japan family visa for an Indian spouse or child follows the same two stages as every long-term Japanese visa: the sponsor in Japan applies at the regional immigration bureau for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE), free and issued in one to three months, and the family member then lodges it at VFS Global for the ₹500 visa, issued in about five working days. Families of Indians on work, Highly Skilled Professional or student status use the Dependent status, with work of 28 hours a week on permission; spouses of Japanese citizens use Spouse or Child of Japanese National and spouses of permanent residents use Spouse of Permanent Resident, both with unrestricted work. Indian marriage and birth certificates need an MEA apostille and a Japanese translation, and a marriage with a Japanese national must be registered in both countries.
The compact version with the price card and checklist is on the Japan dependent and spouse visa route page. This article explains which status applies, how immigration tests a marriage and where Indian files fall down.
Which Japan family visa applies, and what does each require?
| Status | Who | Sponsor evidence | Work rights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dependent | Spouse and children of work, HSP, student and similar status holders | Sponsor's residence card, employment certificate, income and tax certificates, apostilled and translated marriage and birth certificates | 28 hours a week with permission; HSP spouses full time in professional roles |
| Spouse or Child of Japanese National | Spouse of a Japanese citizen; child of a Japanese citizen | Family register (koseki) showing the marriage, apostilled Indian certificate, questionnaire, photos, Japanese spouse's tax and income documents, guarantor form | Unrestricted |
| Spouse of Permanent Resident | Spouse or child of a PR or special PR | PR's residence card, tax and income documents, marriage certificate, questionnaire | Unrestricted |
Dependent status covers the legally married spouse and children, including adopted children, of a foreign resident who can support them; parents and siblings are not eligible except for HSP holders at ¥8 million household income with a child under seven. The status is tied to the sponsor's period of stay, and the sponsor's income is the test: dependents of employed graduates and HSP holders are routine, while dependents of language-school students are rarely approved. Children attend Japanese public schools without tuition.
How does immigration test a marriage with a Japanese national?
A marriage with a Japanese national must be valid in both countries. Register it in India under the Special Marriage Act or the applicable personal law, obtain the certificate, apostille it at the Ministry of External Affairs through an authorised agency (INR 50 per document plus agency fees) and have it translated into Japanese with the translator's name. The Japanese spouse then files a marriage notification at their municipal office so the family register (koseki) records the marriage; without that entry immigration will not issue a COE.
Immigration then tests the relationship with a detailed questionnaire: how and when you met, the languages you speak together, the proposal, the wedding, each visit and the frequency of contact, supported by photographs across time and chat or call logs. The Japanese spouse's income certificate and municipal tax certificate show the household can support itself, and a guarantor form (mimoto hoshosho) is signed by the Japanese spouse or another resident. Recent marriages, large age gaps and a marriage soon after a previous divorce draw the longest reviews.

How does the application run?
- Register and legalise the marriage: Indian registration, MEA apostille and Japanese translation; for a Japanese spouse, the marriage notification at the municipal office so the koseki shows the marriage.
- The sponsor files the COE at the regional immigration bureau with the application form, photo, income and tax certificates, relationship documents and, for spouses of Japanese nationals, the questionnaire, photographs and guarantor form; one to three months.
- The sponsor sends the original or the electronic COE, valid three months.
- Lodge at VFS Global: MOFA form, 45 x 45 mm photo, passport and COE; pay ₹500; the mission issues the visa in about five working days.
- Arrive and register: residence card at the airport, address registration within 14 days, work permission for dependents at the airport or the bureau, and National Health Insurance enrolment.
How long does it take from India?
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Marriage registration, apostille, translation | 3 to 6 weeks; both countries for Japanese spouses |
| COE processing | 1 to 3 months; longer for recent marriages |
| Visa at VFS | About 5 working days plus handling |
| Travel | Within 3 months of COE |
Dependents of a worker who is also applying can be filed together and receive COEs at the same time, so plan two to four months overall. A worker who arrives first and files for family afterwards should wait until the residence card and the first payslips are in hand.
After arrival
Dependents renew with the sponsor and may work 28 hours a week; a dependent hired full time switches to Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services or another work status, as the Japan work visa guide explains. Spouses of Japanese nationals receive one, three or five years and renew while the marriage continues; a divorce or death must be reported within 14 days and the status changed within six months, usually to Long-Term Resident where there are children in Japan.
Permanent residence is open to spouses of Japanese nationals and permanent residents after three years of marriage with at least one year in Japan, and to dependents on the standard ten-year rule, at ¥200,000 from 1 October 2026 with tax and insurance compliance; the Japan permanent residence guide sets out the file. Naturalisation for spouses is possible after three years in Japan but requires renouncing Indian citizenship.
Why are Japan family visas refused, and what fixes each reason?
Marriage credibility. Inconsistent questionnaire answers, few photographs or contacts, an unexplained age gap or a marriage shortly after a previous divorce. Provide a detailed, consistent account with photographs, visit records and chat logs; both spouses prepare the same facts.
Sponsor's income or tax. Income too low for the household, or unpaid municipal tax or pension. Settle arrears, add savings or a second earner's proof, and wait for a tax year with full compliance.
Dependent of a language-school student. Immigration doubts the student can support a family. Wait until the sponsor moves to a work status or shows sufficient funds and income.
Documents not legalised. A marriage certificate without apostille or translation, or not registered in Japan for a Japanese spouse. Apostille at the MEA, translate, and file the marriage notification in Japan before the COE.
Unregistered marriage. A religious ceremony without civil registration in India. Register under the Special Marriage Act or the applicable personal law and obtain the certificate.
