Indians living in Ireland become Irish citizens by naturalisation after 5 years of reckonable residence in the 9 years before applying, including 365 days of continuous residence immediately before the application. Residence on Stamps 1, 1G, 3, 4 and 5 counts; Stamp 2 student time does not. The application fee is EUR 175, the certificate fee on approval EUR 950 (EUR 200 for minors), the Department of Justice decides most files within 12 months, and the oath of fidelity is taken at a citizenship ceremony. Ireland allows dual citizenship, India does not.
The short version with the price card and checklist is on the Irish citizenship route page. This article is the long version: how reckonable residence is counted for the typical Indian path (student, permit, Stamp 4), the absence limits, character checks, fees, the timeline and the reasons applications are refused.
Who qualifies for Irish citizenship by naturalisation?
Adults aged 18 or over who have 5 years of reckonable residence in the 9 years before applying, including 1 year of continuous residence immediately before, who are of good character, intend to continue living in Ireland and are willing to make the declaration of fidelity to the nation and loyalty to the State. Spouses and civil partners of Irish citizens qualify after 3 years of reckonable residence while married and living together. Children born in Ireland to non-citizen parents qualify after 3 years, and children of a naturalised parent can be included.
Reckonable residence means lawful residence that is not for study, asylum or temporary purposes, counted day by day from the IRP registration dates rather than from the visa or the date of arrival. For the typical Indian path, years on Stamp 1 (employment permit), Stamp 1G (graduate or spouse), Stamp 3 (dependant) and Stamp 4 all count; years on Stamp 2 as a student do not, and neither does time between permissions. The online residency calculator on irishimmigration.ie and your IRP card history produce the count. The Ireland employment permit guide explains how the qualifying years are built.
How is reckonable residence counted for a typical Indian applicant?
| Permission | Counts toward 5 years | Typical Indian scenario |
|---|---|---|
| Stamp 2 (student) | No | 1 to 2 years of a master's degree |
| Stamp 1G (graduate) | Yes | 12 or 24 months after graduation |
| Stamp 1 (employment permit) | Yes | 2 years Critical Skills, or up to 5 General |
| Stamp 1G (spouse of Critical Skills holder) | Yes | Immediately on arrival |
| Stamp 3 (dependant) | Yes | Spouses of General permit holders |
| Stamp 4 | Yes | After 2 years Critical Skills; after 5 General |
| Gaps without permission | No | Late renewals break continuity |
A student who finishes a master's in 2027, holds Stamp 1G for 2 years and then a Critical Skills permit reaches 5 years of reckonable residence in 2032 and applies in the sixth year. The final year must be continuous: up to 70 days outside Ireland are disregarded (100 in exceptional circumstances with evidence), and over the whole 9-year window every day outside the State is deducted. The guide to absences and naturalisation limits compares Ireland's rule with the UK, Canada and Australia.

What does Irish citizenship give, and what does India take away?
Irish citizens hold an EU passport with the right to live and work in any EU state, in the UK under the Common Travel Area, and to vote in Irish and European elections. Children born afterwards are Irish by descent. Because India does not permit dual citizenship, Indian citizenship ends automatically on acquiring Irish citizenship; you surrender the Indian passport at the Embassy of India in Dublin, obtain the renunciation certificate and apply for the Overseas Citizen of India card, which gives lifelong visa-free entry and most economic rights in India except agricultural land, voting and public office. Property already held in India remains yours, and OCI holders may buy residential and commercial property later, though not agricultural land or farmhouses. Many Indian families time the ceremony after a final trip home on the Indian passport, because the renunciation process and the OCI card take 2 to 3 months during which travel to India needs a visa.
Why are naturalisation applications refused, and what fixes each reason?
Residence not reckonable or short. Stamp 2 years counted, or gaps between permissions. Recount using the calculator and apply only when 5 reckonable years are reached.
Final year not continuous. More than 70 days abroad in the year before applying. Wait until a qualifying 365-day period is complete.
Character issues not declared. Road traffic convictions or pending cases left off the form. Declare everything; minor offences rarely refuse but concealment does.
Documents insufficient. Scorecard below the required points. Add Revenue statements, tenancy and bank evidence for each year.
Intention to reside doubted. Applicant living mostly abroad. Show employment, home and family in Ireland.
