Citizenship for Indians through naturalisation takes 3 years of residence in Canada, 4 in Australia, 5 in Ireland, the United States, Germany, Portugal and New Zealand, 5 plus 12 months on indefinite leave to remain in the United Kingdom and 2 years as a permanent resident in Singapore, costs from EUR 175 plus EUR 950 in Ireland to GBP 1,630 in the UK, and ends with one step the other nationalities skip: surrendering the Indian passport and applying for an OCI card, because India does not allow dual nationality.

This guide is the long version of the citizenship hub. Ireland is the verified route page on this site; the other figures are read from the official pages cited at the end and re-checked when the authorities publish changes.

How are the residence years counted?

Three counting rules decide most eligibility questions. Physical presence: Canada counts the days you were in Canada, 1,095 of the last 1,825, with each day on a work or study permit before PR counting as half a day up to 365; the United States asks for half of the 5 years physically present with no single trip over 6 months. Continuous residence with an absence cap: the UK allows 450 days of absence in the 5 years and 90 in the final year; Australia 12 months in 4 years and 90 days in the last; Ireland counts reckonable residence, which excludes time as a student on Stamp 2 and time undocumented, and tolerates about 6 weeks a year abroad. Status-based clocks: Singapore counts years as a permanent resident; Germany counts lawful residence with a settlement or qualifying permit and reduces 5 years to 3 for exceptional integration since the 2024 reform.

Time before permanent residence does not always count. In the UK the 5 years can be on a Skilled Worker or partner visa, but the final 12 months must be on ILR; in Ireland years on an employment permit count but years as a student do not; in Australia only 1 of the 4 years must be as a permanent resident; in the United States the clock starts at the green card.

Which tests and documents are required?

Language tests sit at B1 in the UK and Germany, CLB 4 in Canada, conversational English in New Zealand and a reading and writing test in the United States; Ireland and Singapore set none. Knowledge tests: Life in the UK (24 questions, 75 percent to pass), Canada's test for ages 18 to 54, the US civics test, Australia's test with mandatory values questions and Germany's 33-question naturalisation test. Good character is tested everywhere through police certificates, tax compliance and immigration history: unpaid tax, an undeclared conviction or an overstay on an earlier visa is the most common ground for refusal on the Irish route page and in UK decisions. The ceremony is a legal step, not a formality: in Ireland, the UK, Canada and Australia citizenship takes effect at the oath, and the passport application follows it.

What happens to the Indian passport?

India's Citizenship Act 1955 ends Indian citizenship automatically when another is acquired voluntarily. The Indian passport must be surrendered to the Indian mission for a renunciation or surrender certificate (penalties apply for holding or travelling on the Indian passport after naturalisation), and the OCI card can then be applied for online through the Ministry of External Affairs. The OCI gives lifelong visa-free entry, the right to live and work in India and parity with resident Indians in most economic matters, but not the vote, public office, government employment or the purchase of agricultural land. An OCI holder keeps a PAN and may hold NRO and NRE accounts, becomes eligible for Aadhaar only after 182 days of residence in India in a year, and loses voter registration with citizenship. Children born abroad who take the foreign citizenship need the same surrender and OCI steps, and a minor's OCI must be re-issued when a new passport is obtained before the age of 20.

How long does naturalisation take and what does it cost?

Decision windows are long and move with the backlog. The UK Home Office quotes up to 6 months from a complete application and most decisions arrive inside that; Canada's published processing time for a grant of citizenship has run between 8 and 14 months, with the test invitation arriving a few months in; Australia takes 9 to 16 months from application to ceremony and the conferral ceremony itself can add a wait of several months in busy councils; the United States lists 5 to 8 months for N-400 at most field offices; Ireland's Department of Justice has brought median times down to about 8 months after a backlog of 2 years. Fees are charged per applicant and are not refunded on refusal: GBP 1,630 in the UK plus the ceremony fee, CAD 630 in Canada, AUD 560 in Australia, USD 760 in the United States, EUR 175 to apply and EUR 950 on certification in Ireland, SGD 70 in Singapore and EUR 255 in Germany. Budget separately for the language and knowledge tests, police certificates from every country of residence, and the Indian renunciation certificate, which the mission charges for in local currency.

Why naturalisation applications get refused, and the fix

The reasons repeat across every system: too many days outside the country in the qualifying period; unpaid tax or undeclared income; an immigration breach such as an overstay or working outside visa conditions during an earlier stay; applying before the PR or ILR waiting period is complete; and a missing or expired document (police certificate, proof of residence, passport pages). The fix is a residence log kept from the first visa, tax filings in order every year and a candid declaration of every earlier visa problem with the evidence that it was resolved. The citizenship refusal page and the Ireland route page list the reasons with the evidence that answers them.

Is naturalisation the right step?

For many Indian professionals permanent residence delivers nearly everything a passport does except the vote and a stronger travel document, without surrendering Indian citizenship; the permanent residence guide covers the 7 PR routes. Naturalise when you want the passport's visa-free travel, the right to vote and to hold public office, protection from losing residence through long absence, or EU-wide free movement from an EU passport. The free eligibility check shows your residence clock and the tests you need for the destination you hold PR in.
