Malaysia DE Rantau Nomad Pass for Indian remote workers
Malaysia's DE Rantau Nomad Pass lets remote workers, freelancers and founders live in Malaysia for 12 months (renewable once) while working for clients and employers outside the country. Indian applicants apply online to the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC): digital professionals show annual income of USD 24,000 and an active contract of at least three months, non-digital professionals USD 60,000, and the pass costs MYR 1,000 for the main applicant and MYR 500 for each dependant. MDEC approval takes about four to eight weeks, after which the Immigration Department issues the Professional Visit Pass sticker in Malaysia.

Malaysia de rantau nomad pass: quick answers
- Who qualifies for DE Rantau?
- Remote workers aged 18 or over in digital fields (software, UX, digital marketing, content, data, IT support, e-commerce) earning USD 24,000 a year or more with a contract of three months or longer with a non-Malaysian company, or freelancers with several such clients; since 2024 non-digital professionals (accountants, lawyers, consultants, founders) qualify at USD 60,000. Income is shown with three months of payslips or invoices and bank statements, and the applicant needs health insurance and a clean record.
- What does it cost?
- MYR 1,000 for the main applicant and MYR 500 for each dependant, paid to MDEC after approval, plus the Immigration Department's Professional Visit Pass fee of about MYR 90 and a visa with reference of up to MYR 50 for Indian passports. Renewal for a second 12 months costs the same. DE Rantau hubs (co-living and co-working spaces in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Johor) are optional and charged at market rates.
- How long does it take from India?
- MDEC reviews applications in about four to eight weeks; approvals are e-mailed with the Immigration Department's letter, after which you collect the visa with reference in India and enter Malaysia for the sticker within the letter's validity. Apply two to three months before you plan to move.

| Visa exemption | Tourists and business visitors | None | 30 days, not extendable | Not permitted |

DE Rantau is run by MDEC, the agency behind Malaysia Digital, and is aimed squarely at the Indian and regional remote-work market: applications are online, the income test is modest and Malaysia's English-speaking cities and low living costs (about MYR 4,000 to 6,000 a month in Kuala Lumpur) suit Indian developers and designers working for US, European or Indian employers. The pass does not allow employment by Malaysian companies or serving Malaysian clients for a fee; that needs an Employment Pass.
Evidence of remote work is the heart of the file: an employment contract or offer letter stating remote work is permitted, or client contracts covering at least three months, together with three months of payslips or invoices and bank statements showing the income. Founders show company registration and revenue. Indian applicants with GST-registered sole proprietorships and overseas clients are routinely approved; those whose only client is a Malaysian firm are refused.
Fees and what they cover
| Item | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DE Rantau Nomad Pass, main applicant | MYR 1,000 | Paid to MDEC after approval |
| Each dependant | MYR 500 | Spouse and children under 18 |
| Professional Visit Pass sticker | About MYR 90 | Immigration Department, in Malaysia |
| Visa with reference (Indian passport) | Up to MYR 50 | At the High Commission or consulate |

Compared with Thailand's DTV (INR 30,000 for five years) the DE Rantau pass is cheaper up front but shorter; compared with an Employment Pass it needs no Malaysian employer. Vistolane prepares the income evidence pack, files on the MDEC portal and charges the MYR 1,000 fee at the official rate.
How the application runs, step by step
- 1
Gather income evidence
Contract or client contracts of 3 months or more, 3 months of payslips or invoices, bank statements showing USD 24,000 or USD 60,000 annualised.
- 2
Apply on the MDEC DE Rantau portal
Personal details, passport, photo, CV, proof of health insurance, dependants' documents; apostilled marriage and birth certificates.
- 3
MDEC review (4 to 8 weeks)
Clarification requests are common; reply within the deadline.
- 4
Pay and collect the approval
MYR 1,000 plus dependants; the Immigration Department's approval letter follows by e-mail.
- 5
Visa with reference and entry
Collect the visa in India, submit the MDAC, enter within the letter's validity and obtain the pass sticker through MDEC's immigration counter.
Timeline for an Indian applicant
| Stage | Typical time | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence pack | 1 to 2 weeks | Contracts, invoices, statements, insurance |
| MDEC review | 4 to 8 weeks | Answer clarification requests |
| Payment and approval letter | 1 week | MYR 1,000 + dependants |
| Visa with reference | 2 to 5 working days | High Commission or consulate |
| Sticker in Malaysia | 1 to 2 weeks | MDEC immigration counter |
Renewal is filed two months before the pass expires with updated income evidence; after the second year, remote workers who want to stay longer move to an Employment Pass with a Malaysian employer or to the MM2H programme.
After arrival: tax, dependants and limits
Spending 182 days in Malaysia in a year makes you tax resident; Malaysia does not tax foreign-sourced income kept abroad, and the exemption on foreign income remitted by individuals runs under current rules to the end of 2026, so nomads should take advice on remittances from 2027 and on treaty credits with India. Spouses on a dependant pass may not work locally; children may attend school.
The pass cannot be used to work for Malaysian clients, register a Malaysian business that employs you or take a local job; doing so leads to cancellation. Holders who receive a Malaysian offer switch to an Employment Pass through the employer, which can be processed without leaving Malaysia.
