A US F-1 student visa application from India in 2026 rests on four things: the Form I-20 issued by a SEVP-certified school, the USD 350 SEVIS I-901 fee paid against the SEVIS ID on that form, funds covering the first year's cost as the I-20 states it, and an interview in which the consular officer applies section 214(b) and, since June 2025, reviews your public social media. The visa fee is USD 185 and the visa can be issued up to 365 days before the program start date. Slots for the autumn intake are released in batches and ran two weeks to three and a half months out across the five Indian posts in 2026.
The compact version with the price card and checklist is on the US F-1 student visa route page. This is the long version, written around a September start.
Who qualifies for an F-1 student visa?
You need an unconditional admission to a full-time program and the I-20 that follows it, enough money for the first year, English suited to the course and an intention to leave the US after study. The officer asks why this university and this course, who pays and what comes afterwards; a specific answer that fits your record is worth more than any document. Applicants moving down a level, switching fields without explanation, or with weak funding draw the hardest questions. The F-1 student visa covers academic programs; vocational courses use the M-1 and exchange programs the J-1.
The I-20 records the program dates, the first-year cost and the SEVIS ID. Pay the I-901 fee at fmjfee.com at least three business days before the interview and keep the receipt. Transfers between schools in the US keep the SEVIS record; a new visa is needed only for the next entry after travel.
What changed for 2026?
Two things matter. The social media rule of June 2025 asks F, M and J applicants to set every account to public so staff can review it, and posts that contradict the application or suggest an intention to stay are a documented ground for refusal or revocation. Separately, DHS proposed in 2025 to replace duration of status with fixed admission periods of up to four years; the rule's status should be checked before travel, because it changes how extensions work for long programs.
How much does it cost?
| Item | USD | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| F-1 visa application (MRV) fee | 185 | Per person, including F-2 dependants |
| SEVIS I-901 fee | 350 | Paid to DHS before the interview; none for F-2 |
| Visa integrity fee | 250 | Enacted in 2025; not on the fee schedule and not collected as of October 2026 |
| OPT application (Form I-765) after study | 470 online / 520 paper | Filed up to 90 days before graduation |
| Change of status inside the US (Form I-539) | 420 online / 470 paper | Only where you stay and change category |
Tests, loan processing and the school's deposit are separate. Vistolane charges the USD 185 fee at the official rate and shows it on the price card; the SEVIS fee is paid directly to DHS in your name.
How much money must I show?
The I-20 lists the first year's tuition, fees and living costs; you must show that amount is available now. Accepted evidence is bank statements and fixed deposits in your or a parent's name, an education loan sanction letter from an Indian bank or NBFC that confirms the amount and disbursal, and scholarship or assistantship letters from the university. Sponsors' income tax returns or Form 16 for three years and salary slips show the money is credible. Funds that appeared weeks before the interview, or a loan that is only approved in principle, are the two most common funding problems. Typical I-20 totals for Indian students run from about USD 35,000 a year at public universities to USD 80,000 at private ones, so the sponsor's income history matters as much as the balance.
How does the application run?
- Accept the offer, pay the deposit, send financial documents and receive the I-20. Pay the SEVIS fee.
- Complete the DS-160 with the SEVIS ID, school details, social media identifiers and photo; pay USD 185 through the appointment portal.
- Book biometrics and the interview when student slots are released; any Indian post is allowed. Set your social media to public.
- Attend with the passport, signed I-20, SEVIS receipt, DS-160 confirmation, admission letter, transcripts, test scores and financial evidence. Answer briefly and specifically.
- Enter up to 30 days before the start date and report to the international student office.
How long does it take from India?
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Offer to I-20 | 2 to 6 weeks |
| SEVIS fee and DS-160 | About a week |
| Interview slot | 2 weeks to 3.5 months, in batches from May |
| Interview to passport | About a week; longer under 221(g) |
| Earliest entry | 30 days before the start date |
Begin the I-20 process by April for a September start, pay SEVIS the day the I-20 arrives and take the first slot you see; Hyderabad and Chennai have often opened earlier dates than Mumbai and Delhi. A refused student may reapply for the same intake if a slot exists.
Working, dependants and what comes after
F-1 students may work on campus up to 20 hours a week in term and full time in breaks. Curricular Practical Training covers internships that are part of the course after the first year; Optional Practical Training gives 12 months after graduation, with a 24-month extension for STEM degrees with an E-Verify employer. F-2 spouses cannot work and may study only part time. Most Indian graduates move to H-1B from OPT through the March registration described in the US H-1B visa guide; the cap-gap rule keeps OPT alive until 1 October when a petition is selected and filed.
Why are F-1 visas refused, and what fixes each reason?
214(b): not a credible student or likely to stay. Vague answers, a program that does not follow from your record, relatives in the US. Prepare a specific study plan tied to your background and a career path, and reapply when you can explain the change or with a better-fitting program.
Funding not credible. Sudden deposits, a sponsor whose income does not support the I-20 cost, a loan only in principle. Show seasoned savings and income history and a sanction letter confirming disbursal.
Social media or DS-160 inconsistencies. Omitted identifiers or posts that contradict the application. List every account, make them public and keep the record consistent.
221(g) administrative processing. Common for sensitive STEM fields. Respond quickly to any request and apply early.
Prior violations or misrepresentation. Obtain the full record, take advice on waivers and disclose everything.
