A Canada study permit application from India in 2026 needs four things in place before you file: a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution, a provincial or territorial attestation letter unless your program is exempt, proof of CAD 23,448 in living funds plus first-year tuition and travel (for applications on or after 1 September 2026), and a plan that explains why this program, in Canada, now. The permit fee is CAD 150, biometrics CAD 85, and IRCC's tool showed about seven weeks for complete applications from India in late October 2026.

The compact version with the checklist and refusal cases is on the Canada study permit route page. This guide is the long version, written for a September intake.

Who qualifies for a Canada study permit?

You need a letter of acceptance from a DLI for a program longer than six months, proof you can pay for the first year without working and a plan for the rest, no criminal or medical inadmissibility, and the attestation letter where it applies. Applicants from India staying more than six months complete an immigration medical exam with an IRCC panel physician; doing it upfront, before filing, saves four to six weeks later.

The officer also weighs the study plan. The recurring question in refusal letters is whether the program follows logically from your previous education and work. A one-year college diploma after an Indian master's degree, or a switch into an unrelated field after five years in another industry, is refused unless the statement of purpose explains the step and the outcome it leads to.

What changed for 2026?

Three things. First, the living-cost figure rose on 1 September 2026 to CAD 23,448 for a single applicant outside Quebec, from CAD 22,895. Second, the national cap continues: IRCC plans around 155,000 new study permits in 2026 and set 309,670 application spaces for students who need a PAL or TAL, allocated to the provinces. Third, master's and doctoral students at public DLIs, primary and secondary pupils, exchange students and permit holders extending at the same institution and level are exempt from the attestation letter. Everyone else, which means most undergraduate and college applicants from India, needs the letter, and an application without it is returned unprocessed with the fee refunded.

How much money must I show, and how?

Family membersLiving funds per year (CAD), applications from 1 Sept 2026
123,448
229,192
335,888
443,572
549,419
Each additional after 76,318

These figures sit on top of tuition and travel. IRCC accepts a receipt for tuition and housing paid to the DLI, a guaranteed investment certificate from a Canadian bank, bank statements for the past six months with the source of every large credit, an education loan sanction letter, a scholarship letter on letterhead, or a sponsor's letter with their employment proof and identification. The GIC is no longer compulsory for Indian applicants since the Student Direct Stream closed in November 2024, but it remains the cleanest single document because the funds are already in Canada. See the wider guide to proving funds for a student visa for how officers read bank statements.

What are the fees?

ItemCAD
Study permit (including extensions)150
Biometrics, per person85
Biometrics, family maximum170

A visitor visa is issued with the permit at no extra charge. The IRCC fee list was last revised on 21 September 2026; Vistolane charges the fees at the official rate and lists them on the Canada destination page.

How does the application run?

  1. Accept the offer and request the PAL or TAL. Pay the deposit the DLI asks for; the institution requests the attestation letter from the province. Exempt applicants skip this step.
  2. Arrange funds and the medical. Fund the GIC or assemble six months of statements and the loan sanction; book the upfront medical with a panel physician in India.
  3. File in the IRCC account and pay CAD 235. Acceptance letter, attestation letter, funds, statement of purpose, passport, photo, transcripts and language test.
  4. Give biometrics within 30 days at a VFS Global centre in India.
  5. Receive the letter of introduction and the visa. The study permit itself is printed at the airport on arrival; carry the acceptance letter and proof of funds for the border officer.

When should I file for a September 2027 intake?

MonthMilestone
February to AprilOffer accepted, deposit paid, PAL or TAL requested
April to MayGIC funded or loan sanctioned, medical done, language test valid
May to early JuneApplication filed; biometrics within two weeks
Mid-June to early AugustDecision in about seven weeks at the current rate
Late AugustTravel with the letter of introduction and funds evidence

Filing after the first week of July leaves no room for a document request. Most DLIs allow a deferral to January if the permit is late; confirm it in writing before the term starts.

Can my spouse work, and what about the post-graduation work permit?

Spouses and partners get an open work permit only in limited cases: when the student is in a master's program of 16 months or more, a doctoral program or an eligible professional degree. Children can attend school.

Off-campus work is capped at 24 hours a week in term time and full time in scheduled breaks, only when the permit carries the work condition; unauthorised hours are non-compliance and can cost the post-graduation work permit. The PGWP runs up to three years depending on program length and level. Since November 2024 applicants need a language result (CLB 7 for university graduates, CLB 5 for college graduates) and, for most non-degree college programs, a credential in an eligible field of study. Check the program against IRCC's current PGWP page before accepting an offer, because the eligible-field list is revised. The guide to post-study work rights across eight destinations compares the PGWP with the UK, Australian and German equivalents.

Why are Canada study permits refused?

Financial insufficiency. The officer was not satisfied you could pay tuition and CAD 23,448 of living costs, or the source of funds was unclear. Fund a GIC, show six months of statements with every large credit explained, and attach the loan sanction letter.

Purpose of study not reasonable. The program did not follow from your record, or similar courses exist in India at lower cost. Rewrite the statement of purpose around a specific career outcome and address any downward move in level directly.

Not satisfied you will leave Canada. Weak ties combined with family already in Canada. State dual intent honestly, then evidence the ties: family business, property, dependants, a return plan with employer letters.

Missing or defective attestation letter. Returned, not refused: ask the DLI to reissue the letter for the exact program and intake and file again; the fee is refunded on a returned application.

Academic record and gaps. Backlogs or an unexplained gap raised doubts about completing the program. Explain gaps with employment letters or medical records and include the DLI's confirmation that your record met its admission standard.
