Vietnam tourist e-Visa for Indian passport holders

Indian citizens need a visa for Vietnam and almost all tourists use the official e-Visa: USD 25 for a single entry or USD 50 for multiple entries, valid for up to 90 days, applied for on evisa.gov.vn with a passport scan and a portrait photo and normally approved in three working days. The e-Visa is accepted at 13 international airports, 16 land border gates and 13 seaports, and you must enter through the port named on the application. There is no visa on arrival for independent travellers; the letter-based 'visa on arrival' sold by agencies is a different, pricier product.

Vietnam tourist e-visa: quick answers

Do Indians need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes. India is not on Vietnam's visa-exemption list, so every Indian passport holder needs a visa before boarding; airlines check it. The e-Visa covers tourism, visiting friends and family, business meetings and other short purposes for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, and is valid for ordinary passports with at least six months left.
What does it cost?
USD 25 for a single-entry e-Visa and USD 50 for a multiple-entry e-Visa, paid by card on evisa.gov.vn; the fee is not refunded on refusal. There are no VFS or embassy charges for the e-Visa, and children, including infants on a parent's passport, each need their own e-Visa and fee. Vistolane charges the government fee at the official rate and shows its service separately.
How long does it take from India?
The Immigration Department publishes three working days; most Indian applicants receive the PDF in two to four days, and Tet (late January or February) and the Christmas period add several days. Apply at least a week before travel and up to a month ahead, because validity starts on the entry date you choose.

Who qualifies, and how the e-Visa works

Vietnam opened the e-Visa to all nationalities on 15 August 2023 and extended validity to 90 days with a multiple-entry option, which made Indian travel to Da Nang, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City surge. The application asks for a scan of the passport data page, a portrait photo (4 by 6 cm, white background, no glasses), your passport issue date, intended entry and exit dates, the entry and exit ports and an address in Vietnam such as a hotel. Business travellers to meetings also use the e-Visa; those being paid in Vietnam or posted for work need the DN business or LD work routes.

The portal is evisa.gov.vn (also at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn); copycat sites charge USD 60 to 200 for the same visa and sometimes submit wrong data. Approved e-Visas are retrieved with the registration code, e-mail and date of birth and printed for check-in. The visa states the exact entry port; arriving at a different port, or before the start date, means refusal at the counter, so transit itineraries through Hanoi to Da Nang must name the first international airport.

Diplomatic and official passport holders are visa-exempt under the India-Vietnam agreement, and Indians with a Vietnamese temporary residence card or an APEC Business Travel Card enter on those documents. Stays over 90 days, employment and study need a visa sponsored by a Vietnamese organisation and issued by the Immigration Department or the embassy in New Delhi.

Indian rupee cards work on the portal (USD billed), and the fee covers the decision only; a refused applicant reapplies with a fresh fee. Vistolane completes the form, checks the photo and port details against the Immigration Department's rejection reasons and charges the USD 25 or USD 50 fee at the official rate.

Timeline for an Indian traveller

Scans and form15 minutesPassport, photo, itinerary
Processing3 working daysLonger around Tet and in December
Validity startYour chosen entry dateDo not arrive earlier
EntrySame dayStamp to the exit date requested
Extension5 to 7 working daysThrough an agent in Vietnam, discretionary

Choose the entry date carefully: the 90 days run from the date on the visa, not from arrival, so a traveller who lands late loses days. Multiple-entry visas suit Indian travellers combining Vietnam with Cambodia or Laos.

At the border and during the stay

Immigration officers at Noi Bai, Tan Son Nhat, Da Nang and Phu Quoc check the printed e-Visa, the return ticket and hotel booking; funds checks are rare. Overstaying costs VND 500,000 to 2 million for a few days and up to VND 20 million with deportation for longer periods, so ask an agent for an extension before the exit date if plans change.

The e-Visa does not allow paid work or study. Indians who find work convert through the employer's work permit and LD visa, usually with a short trip to a neighbouring country; those marrying a Vietnamese citizen move to the TT visa and temporary residence card.

Why applications on this route get refused, and the fix

Data mismatch

Name order, passport number or issue date typed differently from the passport.

The fix. Copy the MRZ exactly; Vistolane double-checks every field before payment.

Photo rejected

Glasses, shadows, cropped head or an old photo.

The fix. Use a fresh 4 by 6 portrait on white with a neutral expression.

Wrong port or early arrival

Arrived at a port not on the visa or before the start date.

The fix. Name the first international airport you land at; set the start date at or before the flight.

Previous overstay

Unpaid overstay or deportation record.

The fix. Settle fines and disclose; apply through the embassy if the portal refuses.

Third-party site errors

Paid a lookalike site that submitted wrong data.

The fix. Use evisa.gov.vn only; reapply with correct data.
