Switzerland family reunification visa for Indian spouses and children
Spouses and children under 18 of Indians holding a Swiss B or C permit apply for family reunification through the cantonal migration office: the sponsor shows adequate housing, income that covers the family without social assistance and, for the spouse, registration for an A1 language course in the cantonal language; the relative then lodges a national type D visa (CHF 88) at VFS Global Switzerland. Reunification must be requested within 5 years of the sponsor's permit (12 months for children over 12), decisions take 8 to 12 weeks, and the family receives the same permit as the sponsor with the right to work. L permit holders may bring family only when the canton agrees, and Indian marriage and birth certificates need the MEA apostille and a certified translation.

Switzerland family reunification visa: quick answers
- Who qualifies for family reunification in Switzerland?
- The spouse (or registered partner) and unmarried children under 18 of a C permit holder (entitlement) or a B permit holder (discretionary, granted when the conditions are met), and in some cantons the family of L permit holders on assignments over 12 months. The sponsor must live with the family in housing suitable for its size, earn enough that the family does not need social assistance, and have no debts under enforcement; the spouse must show A1 spoken language or enrolment in a course. Parents are not eligible under the ordinary rules; a marriage must be valid in India and recognised in Switzerland.
- What does it cost?
- CHF 88 per family member for the national D visa at VFS Global Switzerland plus its service fee of about INR 2,700, then CHF 65 to 160 per person for the permit card on registration. The MEA apostille costs about INR 50 per document plus agency fees, certified translations CHF 40 to 80 per page, and Swiss health insurance CHF 300 to 450 a month per adult and CHF 100 per child. Vistolane charges the CHF 88 fee per person at the official rate and shows the apostille, translation and insurance separately.
- How long does it take from India?
- The cantonal migration office decides in 6 to 10 weeks once the sponsor's file is complete, and the mission issues the D visa 1 to 2 weeks after the authorisation, so 8 to 12 weeks overall; Zurich and Geneva are faster than smaller cantons, and requests for housing or income evidence add weeks. The sponsor can file as soon as the permit is issued, and the family can lodge at VFS in parallel in most cantons.

Conditions and deadlines
| Condition | What it means | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Sponsor's permit | C permit (entitlement) or B permit (granted when conditions met); L only with cantonal consent | Permit card |
| Cohabitation | Family lives together in Switzerland | Rental contract naming the family |
| Housing | Adequate for the family size; cantons apply a rooms-minus-one rule | Lease, floor plan |
| Income | Covers the family's needs without social assistance (cantonal SKOS guidelines, roughly CHF 4,500 to 6,000 net a month for a family of three in Zurich) | Payslips, employment contract |
| Language | Spouse: A1 spoken or enrolment in a course; A1 proven within a year | Course registration or certificate |
| Deadline | Within 5 years of the sponsor's permit; within 12 months for children aged 12 to 18 | Permit issue date |
| Documents | Marriage and birth certificates with MEA apostille and certified translation | Legalised copies |
Missing the 5-year or 12-month deadline is the most common structural refusal: late requests are granted only for important family reasons. Integration agreements are used by some German-speaking cantons, requiring the spouse to reach A1 within a year and A2 for renewal. Family members of Swiss citizens and of EU/EFTA nationals follow more generous rules outside this page.

Workers arriving on a B permit should start the housing search immediately, since a one-bedroom flat will not carry a family of three.
After arrival: work, school, language and settlement
Spouses receive a permit matching the sponsor's and may take any employment or self-employment in the canton without a separate labour-market test; children attend state schools free, with cantonal integration classes for German, French or Italian. Permits renew with the sponsor's, and the spouse must show A1 (and A2 at later renewals in some cantons); after 3 years of marriage and 5 of residence a spouse's permit becomes independent of the marriage.
Family years count fully toward the 10 years for the C settlement permit and naturalisation, and children who complete schooling in Switzerland may qualify for facilitated naturalisation; Indian law requires renunciation of Indian citizenship on acquiring Swiss. Divorce ends the derived permit unless the marriage lasted 3 years with successful integration.
