Spain Schengen visa for Indian passport holders
Indian citizens need a Schengen visa for Spain: EUR 90 per adult (EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, free under 6), lodged at a BLS International centre in India and decided by the Embassy in New Delhi or the Consulate General in Mumbai within 15 calendar days, extendable to 45. Spain sets the funds to show at 10 per cent of the monthly minimum wage per person per day, EUR 122.10 in 2026, with a minimum of EUR 1,098.90 for the trip. The visa allows 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen area, and the cascade for India grants two-year and then five-year multiple-entry visas to travellers with two visas in three years.

Spain schengen visa: quick answers
- Do Indians need a visa for Spain?
- Yes. Indian ordinary passport holders need a short-stay Schengen visa (type C) for tourism, business, family visits, conferences and medical treatment of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A visa issued by Spain is valid in all 29 Schengen states, and Spain must be the main destination or the first entry point when stays are equal. Study over 90 days, work, family reunification and remote work use national type D visas, covered on the other Spain route pages.
- What does it cost?
- EUR 90 per adult and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11 (free under 6), paid in rupees at BLS at the consulate's quarterly exchange rate (about INR 9,600 in 2026), plus the BLS service fee of about INR 1,700 and optional courier, SMS and premium lounge charges. The fee is not refunded on refusal. Vistolane charges the EUR 90 fee at the official rate and shows its service separately.
- How long does it take from India?
- The Visa Code allows 15 calendar days from lodging, extendable to 45 in individual cases; the Spanish missions in India decide most tourist files in 10 to 20 days and take 20 to 40 days between April and July. BLS appointments can be scarce in peak months, so start six to eight weeks before travel and no earlier than six months.

Who qualifies, and how Spain assesses a tourist file
Any Indian passport holder with a passport valid three months beyond the return date, issued within ten years and with two blank pages can apply. Spain's consulates assess the purpose, the funds and the intention to return: confirmed flights, hotel bookings for every night or an invitation from a host in Spain (carta de invitación issued by the police for private stays), travel insurance of EUR 30,000 valid in all Schengen states, and ties in India through employment, business, property or family. Business visitors add the Spanish company's invitation and the Indian employer's letter; visitors to relatives add the relationship documents and the host's residence card.
Spain publishes the funds rule every year by order of the Ministry of the Interior: 10 per cent of the gross monthly minimum wage per person per day, EUR 122.10 in 2026 with the SMI at EUR 1,221, and a minimum of 90 per cent of the SMI, EUR 1,098.90, for any trip, shown with three months of bank statements, salary slips and the latest income tax return or business documents. A sponsor's documents count when the sponsor signs a declaration of support.
Under the Schengen cascade for India in force since 18 April 2024, applicants with two visas used in the last three years can receive a two-year multiple-entry visa and then a five-year visa at the same fee; first-time travellers receive a visa for the trip. Fingerprints are kept for 59 months, so a repeat applicant within that window can lodge through a representative at BLS.

Timeline for an Indian traveller
| Stage | Typical time | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Documents | 1 to 2 weeks | Statements, ITR, employer letter, bookings |
| BLS appointment | Days to 4 weeks | Longest from April to July |
| Consulate processing | 10 to 20 days; up to 45 | Extra documents or interview possible |
| Passport return | 2 to 4 days | Courier or collection |
| Validity | Matches the trip; 2 or 5 years under the cascade | Apply up to 6 months ahead |
Summer and Easter are the slowest; Indian school holidays in May and June coincide with the Spanish peak, so book BLS early.
At the border and during the stay
Border officers at Madrid Barajas and Barcelona El Prat check the passport, visa, return ticket, accommodation and funds, and record the entry; the EU Entry/Exit System replaces passport stamps with a biometric record. The 90-in-180 count covers all Schengen states, so days in Portugal or France on the same visa count against the total.
Visitors may attend meetings, conferences and trade fairs but may not work or be paid in Spain. A type C visa cannot be converted into a residence permit inside Spain except in narrow cases; students, workers, families and remote workers apply for type D visas in India or, where the law allows, for residence authorisations from Spain.
