Japan temporary visitor visa for Indian passport holders
Indian passport holders pay a flat ₹500 for a Japan visa, single or multiple entry, even after Japan raised fees worldwide on 1 July 2026. Applications go through VFS Global for the Embassy in New Delhi or the consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata (walk-in counters closed from 2 March 2026); the missions need at least four to five working days and VFS quotes six to twelve working days end to end depending on the city. A tourism eVISA is available for residents of India, and the stay is up to 90 days.

Japan temporary visitor visa: quick answers
- Who needs a Japan visa?
- Every Indian ordinary passport holder, for tourism, visiting friends or relatives, business meetings and conferences, for stays up to 90 days. Multiple-entry visas valid one to five years are issued to applicants with sufficient financial capacity or previous Japan travel. Transit passengers who stay airside do not need a visa; those leaving the airport do.
- What does it cost?
- ₹500 per applicant for single or multiple entry, paid at VFS, non-refundable. India keeps a concessional flat rate under the bilateral arrangement, while most nationalities pay the MOFA standard fee that rose on 1 July 2026. VFS Global charges its own service fee per application; the eVISA costs the same ₹500.
- How long does it take from India?
- The missions require a minimum of four working days (Mumbai) to five (New Delhi and Kolkata) after the application reaches them, and VFS quotes six working days in Bengaluru and ten to twelve in the Mumbai jurisdiction (Mumbai 10, Pune, Ahmedabad and Goa 12). Apply three to four weeks before travel and up to 89 days ahead.

Who qualifies for a Japan temporary visitor visa
Japan assesses the purpose, the schedule of stay and the applicant's ability to pay. A day-by-day schedule of stay in the MOFA format, flight and hotel bookings, six months of bank statements, the last income tax return and an employer's letter or business registration form the core file for tourism; visits to relatives add the host's invitation, guarantee letter and residence card. Business visits add the Japanese company's invitation and the Indian employer's letter.
Multiple-entry visas (one to five years, 15 to 90 days per visit) are granted to Indians with sufficient financial capacity, two or more Japan visits in the last three years, or a valid visa for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Schengen or New Zealand with travel history. Since 2 March 2026 the four consulates no longer accept walk-in applications; every file goes through VFS Global or an accredited travel agency.
The eVISA for tourism is open to residents of India: apply online, upload the same documents and receive an electronic visa for a single entry of up to 90 days at the same ₹500 fee; it is not available for business or family visits, which stay on paper. A refusal carries a six-month bar on reapplying for the same purpose unless circumstances change, so files should be complete the first time.
Fees and what they cover
| Item | INR | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Visa fee, single entry (Indian nationals) | 500 | Flat concessional rate; not refunded |
| Visa fee, multiple entry (Indian nationals) | 500 | Same flat rate; 1 to 5 years' validity |
| eVISA (tourism, single entry) | 500 | Online application for residents of India |

The fee is paid in cash or card at VFS when the file is lodged. Vistolane charges the ₹500 government fee as listed and shows VFS and its own service separately on the price card.

|---|---|---|
| Documents | 1 to 2 weeks | Schedule of stay, bookings, statements, ITR |
| VFS appointment | Days to 2 weeks | Peak in March to April and October |
| Mission processing | Minimum 4 to 5 working days; 6 to 12 via VFS | Longer in the Mumbai jurisdiction |
| Passport return | 2 to 4 days | Courier or collection |
Apply three to four weeks before departure, five to six weeks for cherry-blossom and autumn-foliage dates when VFS slots and mission queues are longest.
At the border and during the stay
Immigration grants landing permission for 15, 30 or 90 days and stamps or records the period; extensions of a temporary visitor stay are granted only in exceptional circumstances. Visitors cannot work or be paid in Japan, including remote work for an Indian employer in most readings of the rules; business meetings, market research and conference attendance are allowed.
Compliant visits build the record that earns multiple-entry visas on later applications. Long stays for study, work or family need a Certificate of Eligibility issued in Japan before the visa; the other Japan route pages explain those routes.

Why applications on this route get refused, and the fix
Financial capacity not shown
Low or irregular balances, recent lump sums or missing ITR.
The fix. Show six months of statements with regular income and the ITR; a sponsor in India adds their documents and a relationship proof.
Purpose or schedule unclear
A thin or inconsistent schedule of stay, or bookings that did not match.
The fix. Submit a realistic day-by-day schedule matching reservations; keep the trip within what the funds support.
Host documents incomplete
Invitation or guarantee letter missing, or the host's residence card not provided.
The fix. Hosts in Japan complete the MOFA invitation and guarantee letters and attach residence card copies.
Travel history and ties
First-time long-haul traveller with no employment proof or family ties.
The fix. Add the employer's leave letter, business proof and family documents; consider a shorter first trip.
Previous refusal within six months
Reapplying for the same purpose within the six-month bar.
The fix. Wait out the bar or apply for a different purpose with new evidence.
