Visitor visa: refusal reasons and the fix

Canada Visitor visa, government fee CAD 100 per person; verified against canada.ca. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.

Purpose of visit not credible

The officer was not satisfied the visit was for tourism or a family event: thin itinerary, no invitation, or an invitation that did not match the travel dates.

The fix. Rebuild the file around one clear purpose with dated evidence (wedding card, conference registration, hotel bookings that match the flight dates) and a host letter that states who pays.

Insufficient funds or unexplained deposits

Statements showed a balance that appeared in the last few weeks, or the trip cost exceeded what the salary could plausibly support.

The fix. Show four to six months of statements with the source of every large credit (property sale deed, maturity of a deposit, gift letter from a parent with their statements).

Weak ties to India

No employer letter, a short job history, no property or dependants, or a long gap in employment.

The fix. Add approved-leave letter, ITRs, property or FD proof and a short, factual explanation of what you return to; students add an enrolment letter and the academic calendar.

Travel history and previous refusals

Limited international travel, or a prior US, UK or Canadian refusal that was not declared or not explained.

The fix. Declare every refusal in the form, attach the refusal letters and a one-page explanation of what has changed since.

Misrepresentation

A document that could not be verified, an undeclared refusal or an employer who did not confirm the letter. A finding under section 40 carries a five-year ban.

The fix. Never submit a document you cannot stand behind; if an agent prepared an earlier file, obtain the GCMS notes before reapplying so the new file addresses what was recorded.

Study permit: refusal reasons and the fix

Canada Study permit, government fee CAD 150 per person; verified against canada.ca. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.

Financial insufficiency

The officer was not satisfied you could pay tuition and CAD 23,448 of living costs for year one, or the source of the funds was unclear.

The fix. Fund a GIC, show six months of statements with every large credit explained, and attach the loan sanction letter; add the sponsor's ITRs when parents pay.

Purpose of study not reasonable

The program did not follow from your previous education or work, or similar courses were available in India at lower cost without an explanation.

The fix. Rewrite the statement of purpose around a specific career outcome, name the modules and employers that make this program the right step, and address any downward move in level directly.

Not satisfied you will leave Canada

Weak ties to India combined with family already in Canada, or a statement that read as a plan to settle.

The fix. State dual intent honestly, then evidence the ties: family business, property, dependants, a job offer or return plan with employer letters.

Missing or defective attestation letter

The application was returned because the PAL or TAL was absent, expired or issued for a different DLI or program.

The fix. Ask the DLI to reissue the letter for the exact program and intake and file again; the IRCC fee is refunded when an application is returned.

Academic record and gaps

Low marks, backlogs or an unexplained gap of several years raised doubts about completing the program.

The fix. Explain gaps with employment letters or medical records, include the DLI's confirmation that your record met its admission standard, and show recent relevant work or study.

Work permit: refusal reasons and the fix

Canada Work permit, government fee CAD 155 per person; verified against canada.ca. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.

Not qualified for the job offered

Education or experience letters did not match the requirements in the LMIA or the NOC duties; the officer doubted you could perform the work.

The fix. Obtain detailed experience letters that mirror the NOC lead statement and main duties, add an educational credential assessment and any licensing eligibility letter.

Genuineness of the job offer

The employer's size, revenue or history did not support the role, or the wage was below the stream threshold, so the officer questioned whether the job existed as described.

The fix. Employers should keep the LMIA file complete (business registration, payroll, premises) and offer at least the median wage plus 20 percent; workers should request a copy of the full LMIA before filing.

Not satisfied you will leave Canada

Weak ties, family in Canada and no explanation of plans after the permit.

The fix. Declare dual intent, then document ties and a plan: property, dependants, savings and the employer's statement of the contract term.

LMIA expired or refused to process

The LMIA was used after its six-month validity or Service Canada refused to process a low-wage application in a 6-percent-unemployment region.

The fix. File the permit within the LMIA validity window; employers in affected regions move the role to the high-wage stream or an exemption category before re-advertising.

Misrepresentation

A recruiter supplied an experience letter the employer did not issue, or an earlier refusal was not declared. Section 40 findings bring a five-year ban.

The fix. Verify every letter with the issuer, declare all refusals and never pay a recruiter for an LMIA; report demands for payment to Service Canada.

Express Entry: refusal reasons and the fix

Canada Express Entry, government fee CAD 1,590 principal applicant; verified against canada.ca. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.

Work experience does not match the NOC

Reference letters listed a title but not the duties, or the duties matched a different NOC, so the claimed points fell and the application was refused for not meeting the ITA score.

The fix. Draft letters that mirror the NOC lead statement and most main duties, include hours and pay, and keep corroborating pay slips; if an employer will not sign, use a colleague's affidavit plus payroll evidence and explain why.

Proof of funds below the threshold

Funds dipped under the required figure between the ITA and the decision, or the letter lacked six-month averages and debts.

The fix. Hold more than the figure throughout, use bank letters with every required field and avoid moving money between accounts during processing.

Misrepresentation

An ECA, letter or test result could not be verified, a previous refusal was not declared or a dependant was omitted. A section 40 finding brings a five-year ban from any application.

The fix. Declare every family member and refusal, use only documents the issuer will confirm, and answer procedural fairness letters with evidence within the deadline.

Expired language test or ECA at the invitation

The test passed its two-year mark or the ECA its five-year mark before the ITA, so the points were recalculated downward.

The fix. Rebook the test early and keep the profile updated; a lapse makes the profile ineligible on the day of the round.

Incomplete application within 60 days

A police certificate or medical arrived after the deadline and the application was rejected as incomplete.

The fix. Start police certificates on the day of the ITA, request a document extension with proof only when IRCC's own instructions allow it, and upload a letter of explanation for anything pending.

Spousal and partner sponsorship: refusal reasons and the fix

Canada Spousal and partner sponsorship, government fee CAD 1,260 per spouse; verified against canada.ca. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.

Relationship not genuine or entered into for immigration

The officer found inconsistencies between IMM 5532, the interview and the evidence: few meetings before marriage, no shared finances, communication that started only around the wedding, or a previous sponsorship pattern.

The fix. Build a chronological evidence file that covers the whole relationship, explain cultural context for an arranged marriage in a joint statement, prepare both spouses for the interview on dates and family details, and seek legal advice before reapplying or appealing to the Immigration Appeal Division.

Sponsor ineligible

The sponsor was on social assistance, in default of a previous undertaking or support order, undischarged bankrupt, or had been sponsored as a spouse within the past five years.

The fix. Clear the default or wait out the bar, then reapply; the five-year rule cannot be waived.

Misrepresentation

An undeclared previous marriage, a child omitted from IMM 5406, or documents that did not verify. A section 40 finding bars the applicant for five years and can affect the sponsor.

The fix. Declare every marriage, child and refusal on every form, including non-accompanying children, and use certified translations of registered documents.

Applicant inadmissible

A conviction, a medical condition expected to place excessive demand (spouses are exempt from excessive demand but not from danger to public health) or a security concern.

The fix. Obtain the criminal rehabilitation or record suspension before filing; complete the medical upfront and respond to any procedural fairness letter with specialist reports.

Incomplete or inconsistent application

Missing police certificate, unsigned form or different dates for the same event across forms led to a return or refusal.

The fix. Use the IRCC document checklist line by line, have both spouses review every form together, and keep one timeline document that every answer is drawn from.
