A UK Standard Visitor visa for an Indian passport holder costs £135, allows stays of up to six months per visit, and is usually decided within three weeks of the biometrics appointment at a VFS Global centre in India. The Home Office published its current fee table on 8 October 2026, and its processing figures for Indian visitor applications have stayed inside the 15-working-day service standard through 2026. This guide covers who qualifies, what goes into the file, how the weeks run, and what each refusal paragraph means if the decision goes the other way.
The short version of the rules, with the price card and checklist, is on the UK Standard Visitor visa route page. This article is the long version with the reasoning behind each document.
Who needs a UK visitor visa in 2026?
Every Indian citizen, for every visit. India is a visa-national country under Appendix Visitor: Visa national list, so the £20 electronic travel authorisation that Americans, Australians and EU citizens now use does not apply. You apply online, give fingerprints and a photo at VFS Global, and receive the permission as an eVisa linked to your passport rather than a sticker.
Transit is caught too. Changing planes at Heathrow without passing immigration needs a Direct Airside Transit visa (£35) unless you hold an exempting document such as a valid US, Canadian, Australian or Schengen visa used as part of a reasonable journey. Landside transit of up to 48 hours uses the Visitor in Transit visa (£74.50).
The Standard Visitor visa covers tourism, visiting friends and family, business meetings and negotiations, conferences, short recreational courses and study of up to six months at an accredited institution, and private medical treatment. It does not allow paid or unpaid work, self-employment, marriage (that is the Marriage Visitor visa) or public funds.
What does the officer actually decide?
Appendix V sets the test. The entry clearance officer must be satisfied that you are a genuine visitor: you will leave at the end of the visit, you will not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits or make it your main home, you will not do anything outside the permitted activities, and you have enough money to pay for the trip and the return journey without working or relying on public funds. There is no points table and no interview in most cases; the decision is made on the papers you upload.
Refusal letters quote paragraph V 4.2 and then set out the facts the officer weighed: your employment and income, your savings, your family in India and in the UK, your travel history, the cost of the trip against your means, and anything in your history with UK or other immigration authorities. A strong file answers each of those points with a dated document rather than a sentence in a cover letter.

Fees are paid by card at the end of the gov.uk form and are not refunded if the visa is refused. VFS Global charges its own service fee when you book the appointment; document scanning, courier return and keeping your passport are priced separately. No immigration health surcharge applies to visitors. Vistolane charges the government fee at the official rate and shows it separately on the United Kingdom destination page.
What documents go in the file?
Identity and forms. A passport valid for the whole stay with a blank page, previous passports showing UK, Schengen, US, Canadian or Australian visas, the completed online application and the VFS appointment confirmation. A paper photo is needed only where the centre cannot capture a biometric photo.
Purpose. For a holiday, an itinerary with hotel reservations that match the dates on the form and the flights. For a family visit, an invitation letter stating the relationship, the address, the dates and who pays, with a copy of the host's British passport, eVisa share code or biometric residence permit and a council tax bill or tenancy agreement for the address. For business, a letter from the UK company and one from your employer explaining the purpose and who pays. A return flight reservation is enough; do not buy a non-refundable ticket before the decision.
Funds. Six months of bank statements with salary credits visible, two years of income tax returns (ITR-V or Form 16, or audited accounts and GST returns for business owners), and the sponsor's statements, pay slips and a signed letter if someone else pays. Large unexplained deposits in the last three months are the most common funds problem; document the source of each one.
Ties to India. An employer letter on letterhead with designation, salary, start date and approved leave dates, a GST certificate or incorporation documents for the self-employed, property documents, fixed deposits, and marriage and birth certificates of dependants staying in India.
Use the travel document checklist to tick items off before you upload them to the VFS portal.
How long does the UK visitor visa take from India?
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Gathering documents | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Form submitted to VFS appointment | 3 to 14 days; longer in Delhi and Mumbai from April to July |
| Biometrics to decision | About 3 weeks (15 working days); priority about 5 working days |
| Decision to travel | Same day: the eVisa is live once your UKVI account is linked |
The earliest you can apply is three months before travel. Six to eight weeks ahead is comfortable for a straightforward file, ten or more if you want time to reapply after a refusal. VFS Global runs centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Kochi, Goa and Jaipur; the passport is returned the same day in most cases because the decision is issued as an eVisa.
What happens at the border and during the stay?
Indian citizens holding a visitor visa can use the eGates at most UK airports, so the passport is not stamped; keep the boarding pass as proof of your entry date. Each visit can last up to six months, but Border Force and UKVI watch the pattern. Spending more time in the UK than outside it over a 12-month period, or arriving again days after leaving, leads to refusal of the next application or cancellation of a long-term visa.
A visitor cannot switch into a work, study or family visa from inside the UK; you return to India and apply from there. English language courses of up to 11 months use the Short-term Study visa (£228) instead of the visitor route.
Why are UK visitor visas refused, and what fixes each reason?
Not a genuine visitor (V 4.2). A thin itinerary, an unclear purpose, or a history that suggests repeated long stays. Rebuild the file around one dated purpose with bookings or an invitation, and set out why you return: approved leave, a business, property, dependants.
Funds and unexplained deposits. Recent lump sums with no source, or a trip cost that the declared income cannot support. Show six months of statements with the source of every large credit (sale deed, deposit maturity, gift letter with the giver's statements) and keep the trip proportionate.
Employment not verified. UKVI could not reach the employer or the salary on the letter did not match the statements. Use letterhead with a working phone number and email, and make sure the letter, the credits and the ITR tell the same story.
Undeclared refusal or deception (paragraph 9.8). An earlier refusal by any country left off the form, or a document that could not be verified. A deception finding brings a ban of up to ten years. Declare every refusal with the letters attached; if an agent prepared an earlier application, obtain a subject access request before reapplying.
There is no appeal against a visitor visa refusal. You can reapply immediately, and the new file should answer each point in the refusal letter with evidence.
