Indian citizens need a Visitor Visa for New Zealand. India is not on the NZeTA visa-waiver list, so every traveller applies online: NZD 341 for the visa (NZD 300 fee plus NZD 41 immigration levy) and NZD 100 for the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, NZD 441 in total. Immigration New Zealand decides 80 per cent of visitor visas within 2 weeks, the visa allows 6 months in any 12 (multiple entry) or 9 months in 18 (single entry), and you must show NZD 1,000 a month in funds or a sponsor's INZ 1025 form.

The short version with the price card and checklist is on the New Zealand visitor visa route page. This article is the long version: how Immigration New Zealand reads bona fides, the funds rules, the sponsorship form, documents, the timeline from India and the refusal reasons that come up again and again.

Do Indians need a visa for New Zealand?

Yes. The New Zealand visa for Indians on a short trip is the Visitor Visa, required for tourism, visiting family, business meetings (as a Business Visitor), short courses of up to 3 months and medical treatment. New Zealand grants visa-free entry through the NZeTA to about 60 countries, and India is not among them; Indian citizens who hold Australian permanent residence are the only group who can arrive without a visa, using the Australian resident visa on arrival.

The visa is granted as multiple entry for stays totalling 6 months in any 12-month period, or as single entry for one stay of up to 9 months in 18. Partners and dependent children aged 19 or under can be included in one application. Paid work for a New Zealand business, study longer than 3 months and stays beyond 9 months need other visas: the New Zealand work visa guide and the New Zealand student visa guide cover those.

The total of NZD 441 is about INR 22,500 in 2026 and is paid by credit or debit card in New Zealand dollars when the online form is submitted. Vistolane charges the government fee and levy at the official rate and shows its service separately on the New Zealand destination page.

How does Immigration New Zealand assess a visitor application?

Officers test four things: genuine intentions (bona fides), funds, health and character. Bona fides is the one that decides most Indian files. The officer reads your personal circumstances in India, employment or business, family, property, previous travel and whether the itinerary makes sense for the dates, and asks whether you are likely to leave at the end of the visit. Visiting a child on a work visa in Auckland, a two-island tourist loop or a trade show in Christchurch are all ordinary purposes; the file fails when the purpose is thin and the applicant has few reasons to return.

Funds are NZD 1,000 for each month of stay, or NZD 400 a month when accommodation is prepaid, shown on bank statements in your own name, plus the money or ticket for onward travel. A sponsor in New Zealand (a relative, friend or organisation) can instead complete the Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry (INZ 1025), which commits them to accommodation, maintenance and repatriation costs; the sponsor shows their own income and the applicant still shows ties to India.

Health and character requirements are light for short visits: a chest X-ray is needed when the total stay exceeds 6 months because India is not on the low-incidence tuberculosis list, a full medical when it exceeds 12 months, and police certificates only when total time in New Zealand reaches 24 months.

What documents does the New Zealand visitor visa need?

Identity and forms. A passport valid 3 months beyond the planned departure, a digital photo to INZ standards taken within 6 months, the online application completed through a RealMe account and the health and character declarations.

Trip. An itinerary and accommodation plan (bookings or a host's letter with their visa or citizenship evidence), a return or onward ticket or the funds for one, travel insurance (recommended, since visitors pay for healthcare) and the signed INZ 1025 form when a New Zealand sponsor covers costs.

Funds and ties. Three months of bank statements meeting NZD 1,000 a month, an employer leave letter or business registration, the last 2 years of income tax returns, and evidence of family and property in India. The travel document checklist helps you assemble these before you apply.

How does the application run?

  1. Gather the evidence: passport scan, photo, 3 months of statements, employer or business letter, itinerary, accommodation and ticket plan, sponsor form if any.
  2. Create a RealMe account and complete the Visitor Visa application online, including partner and children if they travel with you.
  3. Pay NZD 441 (NZD 341 visa fee plus NZD 100 IVL) by card in New Zealand dollars.
  4. Respond to any request: biometrics at VFS Global in India, a chest X-ray or extra financial evidence. Eighty per cent of files are decided within 2 weeks.
  5. Receive the eVisa by email, complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration within 24 hours of departure and carry funds evidence and the onward ticket for the border.

Christmas and the January school holidays are the slowest period at the offshore processing offices that handle Indian files; apply in October for December travel. The processing times page tracks the current turnaround.

What are the rules at the border and during the stay?

Border officers at Auckland and Christchurch check the eVisa, the onward ticket, funds and the traveller declaration, and may refuse entry if circumstances have changed. The multiple-entry visa allows a total of 6 months in any 12-month period counted back from your intended departure date. Visitors may study for up to 3 months, volunteer and, since 27 January 2025, work remotely for an overseas employer or clients, which suits Indian professionals on long family visits. Any work for a New Zealand employer or client needs a work visa.

A visitor who is offered a job by an accredited employer applies onshore for the Accredited Employer Work Visa, and partners of workers switch to the visa described in the New Zealand partner visa guide. Extending a visit means a new Visitor Visa application before the current one expires, within the 9-in-18-month cap.

Why are New Zealand visitor visas refused, and what fixes each reason?

Bona fides not established. Weak ties to India, long gaps in employment or a stay longer than the purpose needs. Add the employer letter, tax returns, property and family evidence and match the length of stay to the purpose.

Insufficient funds. Statements below NZD 1,000 a month or a lump sum deposited days before applying. Show three months of regular balances or add a sponsor's INZ 1025 form with their evidence.

Sponsor's evidence incomplete. The host's visa, income or accommodation not shown. Attach the sponsor's visa, payslips, tenancy or ownership papers and the signed form.

Health requirements not met. No chest X-ray for a stay over 6 months. Book the panel clinic X-ray before applying for long visits.

Identity or document mismatch. Name or date of birth entered differently from the passport, or untranslated documents. Copy the passport exactly and attach certified English translations. The guide to reading a refusal letter explains how to respond before reapplying.
